Beat was a Los Angeles fanzine founded and published by Stephen Zepeda, who also founded Beat Records and worked as a music promoter in Long Beach, California. The zine covered punk, new wave and rock acts, both local and national. Second issue, featuring coverage of Gary Valentine, the Buzzcocks, the Last, the Quick, a look at the music scene in England in 1978, etc. GOOD+ condition. Minor soiling and toning to the covers. Minor edgewear.

Two books in one, containing the philosophical and rhetorical work of Seneca, including some fragments. GOOD condition. Vellum rather grubby, with some staining and soiling and moderate to heavy toning. Text bock tight. Several names in pencil on the inside covers, with an ink scribbled out inscription on the blank endpaper facing the title page.

A later edition of this novella turned into a play. GOOD condition. Two large scuffs/scrapes to the rear cover, with otherwise general scuffing. Minor fading. Extremities bumped and scuffed.

A single issue of this French art and literary magazine examining the art of late mid to late 19th century, early 20th century France. ALL TEXT IN FRENCH. GOOD condition. Some soiling to the covers, with general browning and light fading. Some staining and scuffing to the rear cover. Yellow wrapper chipped and torn along the spine, with minor wear along the other edges. Interior solid with a previous owner's signature on the title page.

Quarto. 265 pp. Black and white illustrated plates by Travies, Daumier and Gavarni. All text in French. A printing of two 19th century plays featuring the fictional character Robert Macaire. Originally written as a character in a melodrama in the play L'Auberge des Adrets, the character of Macaire was transformed by the actor playing him into an archetypical con man that represented scandals in government, politics and high society in France. Due to the scandalous nature of the character, it was banned from being used in plays in 19th century France, with people charged with crimes for its portrayal (see Wikipedia). VERY GOOD book and slipcase. Minor foxing to the spine of the book. Minor toning. Minor soiling, staining and scuffing to the slipcase and folder.

Paris: L'Illustration Journal Universel, Publisher, 1913. Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. Large folio. Pagination runs 27-46, plus 20 pages of ads. With black and white photos throughout. ALL TEXT IN FRENCH. A single issue of this magazine documenting current events through images, with accompanying articles. Of note in this issue is an article documenting an 'Ecole de Grimeurs' a school or rock climbers/mountaineers. This two page spread is accompanied by black and white photos showing rope work involved in ascending a rock spire and traversing, by rope, between two spires. This is presumed to be in the French Alps, perhaps Chamonix. Also included is an article documenting the second war in the Balkans, an eventual prelude to World War I. GOOD condition. Minor soiling, foxing and fading to the covers, with some browning along the extremities. Light wrinkling along the extremities. Offsetting present along the rear cover extremities. Upper rear corner creased. Minor toning to the paper.

A look at the life and times of The Countess of Castiglione (Virgina Oldoini), an Italian courtesan and secret agent, who was also a mistress of Napoleon. She was also a noted early collector of photography, as well as a photographer. ALL TEXT IS IN ITALIAN. In NEAR FINE condition with mostly minor scuffing to the extremities as well as some scuffing to the rear panel. Minor bumping to the corners. Interior clean and solid.

Small spot of ink on the center front cover. Interior clean and solid with a few stray tick marks in pencil.

Decorative color half title present (or perhaps an original front wrap). 81 pp. The musical score and lyrics to La Navarraise, an opera based on a short story 'La Cigarette' by Jules Claretie, and set in Spain during the Carlist War of 1874. The libretto was written by Clariete and Henri Cain, with the music written by the noted 19th century French composer, Jules Massenet. The opera was first performed in London in 1894. GOOD condition. Spine and hinges reinforced along the exterior with black binding tape, a bit heavy-handedly. General fading, with minor to moderate uneven soiling to the covers. A few small dark ink stains/streaks to the front cover. Minor scuffing and edgewear. Interior hinges reinforced with tape. Several oval ownership/bookseller stamps on the first few endpapers and title page. Text block solid and toned.

Limited edition of this novel by French philosopher Denis Diderot. Published posthumously, the work criticizes the Catholic Church, especially convent life, chronicling physical and mental abuse experienced by the young woman in the story, while also broaching the subject of sexual abuse within the Catholic church. VERY GOOD book. Minor soiling and edgewear. Slipcase and folder in GOOD condition. Some soiling, toning and scuffing to the case and folder. Moderate staining to one panel of the slipcase.

Heavy scuffing to the extremities and leather, especially at the corners and hinges. Head of spine chipped, with part of the backstrip peeling off. Text block shaken and weak but intact. Text block with toning to the paper and minor scattered soiling. Triangular piece cut from the lower corner of a front endpaper.
