Volume covers toned with small water stains and fore-edge wear, crack to upper half of lower cover at spine fold, handling creases and a bump to bottom edge of text block, some leaves still unopened. A paper published by an accomplished mining engineer and professor, apparently to compare the various types of motive power then available for use in the Colonies.

Front cover is ragged and tapped on, rear cover with tears and a large chip from upper corner, text is very good, slightly toned with a few short tears to fore-edge ; the Rockwell ad is fine and unmarked. With Rockwell's signed painting "Look at This Picture - Then Look at Your Light" (Boy Studying) here printed and reproduced in color for it's single published use in promoting the new 75-watt Edison Mazda Lamp. The original is held in the collection of General Electric Lighting Company. Edison Mazda Lampworks was "One of Nelson Rockwell's earliest and most successful ad campaigns." Ref. Moffatt A264.

Montreal, QC: W. Notman Studio, 1886. Mounted Photograph. Good Only. A Builder's Photograph, shot just before No. 306 would have been put into service with the CPR. Mammoth size albumen and silver salts on paper print, measuring 14-1/2 x 20-7/8 inches wide, mounted onto card measuring 22 x 28 inches wide with "W. NOTMAN PHOTO" stamped in blind at bottom right edge. Photo is faded and yellowed, card mount appears brittle w. some soil and chips to edges, verso w. soil and stains from a previous mounting and framer's notes in pencil. This 4-4-0 CPR locomotive was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, New Shops in Montreal, Quebec. It was completed and entered service on October, 1886. Its builder's plate number was 1022. Extra shipping costs possible for this large photograph.

Volume with corners bumped and rubbed through, gutter crack at p. 45, covers lightly rubbed and stained, two library rubber stamps and their numbers in pencil to front pastedown else clean and unmarked. Lydia C. Biddle was born on January 4, 1841 in Philadelphia and was from a prominent Quaker family in Pennsylvania. ref. myheritage dot com.

An 7.5 x 9.25 inch tall, hand-colored gelatin silver photograph, developed onto heavy paper with the title "The Green Timber, Surrey B.C." stamped in blue ink along lower edge ; "Made in U.S.A.", "2330" and "L. Frank, Photo" are all additionally written in negative along the lower edge. A Ford Model 'A' automobile (1927-31) appears to be parked on the roadside as Frank jumped out to take his photo. Photo with some handling creases, else Fine. An uncommon Surrey, B.C. image, not found in any online collections.

Articles include Leprosy in British Columbia and surgically repairing human eyelids in France [on p. 27] with skin taken from the stomach of a frog. [!].

New York, NY, 1914. Very Good. A personal and explanatory letter by Hayden, dated 1914 with details for the recipient on how and where to use the influential financier's letters of introduction. Typed letter signed in ink [TLS] on "Hayden, Stone & Co." watermarked paper with letterhead, a single sheet measuring 11 inches tall x 8-1/2 inches wide, slightly toned with mailing fold lines and creases, lacks envelope. "Charles Hayden (July 8, 1870 - January 8, 1937) was an American banker, businessman, financier and philanthropist. He was the senior partner of Hayden, Stone & Co. and his influence was such that James W. Gerard listed him among those "who are too busy to hold political office, but determine who shall." Noted contributions bearing his name include the Hayden Planetarium in New York, the Charles Hayden Planetarium at Boston's Museum of Science, and the Charles Hayden Foundation. Illustrated saddle stapled wraps, 4to (11-5/16 inches [28.8 cm] tall), pp. 66, filled with stories and illustrated throughout. Volume is toned with a vertical fold, both corners of front cover missing with bottom chip also taking the bottom corner of the first four leaves, slightly rolled with some scattered soil and creasing. Wherein Schmeling correctly predicts the outcome of the June 18th, 1936 fight between Joe Louis and himself - resulting in Louis' only knockout defeat during his prime, just 5 days after the publication of this issue. With cover art by Sam Brown showing a fighter resting between rounds in his corner of the ring while looking on with disbelief at an autograph-seeking fan.
