Description:
London: Faber & Faber, 2023. 1st. p/b. Fine, signed to title. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). In a signed, limited edition, to mark Poet Laureate Simon ArmitageÕs birthday, LX collects fifteen sonnets in sixty stanzas. These verses find the poet in a conversational tussle with his argumentative and occasionally insolent soul. Mischievous and sometimes melancholy, the pieces reflect a long querulous relationship explored through ingenious workings of the sonnet form.

London: Duckworth, 1939. 1st. hardback. Very good, 1st edition, missing d/j, blue boards (a little marked and sunned, soiled on spine), gilt spine titling; text block firm, pages unmarked and tight; light foxing on edges. Rare. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Evelyn Waugh chose the name ""Labels"" for his first travel book because, he said, the places he visited were already ""fully labelled"" in people's minds. Yet even the most seasoned traveller could not fail to be inspired by his quintessentially English attitude and by his eloquent and frequently outrageous wit. From Europe to the Middle East and North Africa, from Egyptian porters and Italian priests to Maltese sailors and Moroccan merchants - as he cruises around the Mediterranean his pen cuts through the local colour to give an entertaining portrait of the Englishman abroad. With a frontispiece (drawn by the author), three pages of plates, a double-spread map and another map in the text

Very good, no d/j, dark blue blindpressed boards clean, gilt spine titling bright; pages unmarked and tightly bound.. 18mo (170 x 100 / 6_"" x 4""). When it appeared in 1874, Lady Anna met with little success, and positively outraged the conservative - `This is the sort of thing the reading public will never stand...a man must be embittered by some violent present exasperation who can like such disruptions of social order as this.' (Saturday Review) - although Trollope himself considered it `the best novel I ever wrote! Very much! Quite far away above all others!!!' This tightly constructed and passionate study of enforced marriage in the world of Radical politics and social inequality, records the lifelong attempt of Countess Lovel to justify her claim to her title, and her daughter Anna's legitimacy, after her husband announces that he already has a wife. However, mother and daughter are driven apart when Anna defies her mother's…

Seems to have never been read.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are a set of six medieval tapestries. Beautiful, intricate and expertly made, they are also mysterious in their origin and meaning. Tapestries give an appearance of order and continuity, as if designed and made by one person, belying the complicated process required to create them. Weavers, patrons, designers, artists, merchants and apprentices were involved in their making, and behind them were the wives, daughters and servants who exercised influences over their men. Like the many strands of wool and silk woven together into one cloth, so these people came together in a complex dance to create the whole picture. Jean le Viste, a newly wealthy member of the French court, commissions the tapestries to hang in…

Pencil inscription on back fep.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist best known for his humorous Essays of Elia from which the essay 'A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig' is taken. Lamb enjoyed a rich social life and became part of a group of young writers that included William Hazlitt, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron and Samuel Taylor Coleridge with whom he shared a lifelong friendship. Lamb never achieved the same literary success as his friends but his influence on the English essay form cannot be underestimated and his book, Specimens of the English Dramatic Poets is remembered for popularising the work of Shakespeare's contemporaries.

All Hogglestock believed their parson to be innocent; but then all Hogglestock believed him to be mad.' Josiah Crawley lives with his family in the parish of Hogglestock, East Barsetshire, where he is perpetual curate. Impoverished like his parishioners, Crawley is hard-working and respected but he is an unhappy, disappointed man, ill-suited to cope when calamity strikes. He is accused of stealing a cheque to pay off his debts; too proud to defend himself, he risks ruin and disgrace unless the truth can be brought to light. Crawley's predicament divides the community into those who seek to help him despite himself, and those who, like Mrs Proudie, are convinced of his guilt. When the Archbishop's son, Major Grantly,…

One of the greatest thinkers of the nineteenth century, Søren Kierkegaard (1814-55) often expressed himself through pseudonyms and disguises. His private reflections reveal the development of his own thought and personality with a freedom not seen in works he published during his lifetime. A combination of theoretical argument, vivid natural description and sharply honed wit. here presents his brilliant challenge to 'Christendom' to admit that it has nothing to do with Christianity. He also provides a wealth of reflection on such diverse subjects as celibacy, the nature of woman, the power of the daily press, the meaning of 'witnessing to the truth', and on Kierkegaard's own experiences.
