Description:
Mabton, WA: [Mabton Commercial Club, Mabton Bank], Dec. 27, 1907. 4to. 24 pp. With photo illustrations. Printed red softcovers, black lettering & decorative borders front & back cover, ads on back cover, and inner covers (minor spotting, soiling, scuffing), still G copy. First edition of this very rare land promotion issued just two years after the disastrous 1905 fire which destroyed most of downtown Mabton. Founded originally as a depot for the Northern Pacific’s maintenance workers on the eastern edge of the Yakima Indian reservation, Mabton quickly grew after the construction of the Sunnyside Irrigation Canal. The photos within this image show the Westward and Eastward views along B Street, new schools, along with the local drug stores, hotel, jewelry store, homes, and even real estate office. Just four years later, former President Roosevelt in 1911 made a short stop in his tour of the West to speak. Worldcat locates 2 copies (SMU, Yakima Valley Libraries).

New York: D.H. Anderson, 1893. One large original albumen photograph, sized 17.5 x 21 in. mounted on 21 x 25 in. board (minor chipping & damage to fore-edges of board, some very minor staining), still a VG image. First edition of this very scarce and early attempt at art photography of the patriotic sort, and often referred to as reenactment photography. While the image of Sheridan is indeed from a photographic negative, the backdrop of galloping horse, and battlefield, have all been supplied via lithography. This was an unusual and labor-intensive special effects process of which Anderson developed most of his skills during the Civil War in the Richmond, VA area. Anderson (1827-1905) began his career as a daguerreotype photographer in Paducah, KY in 1855, and moved throughout the South and Midwest before landing in Richmond during the Civil War. In 1879 he sold his business there to George Cook, and purchased and refitted Mathew Brady’s historic studio at 785 Broadway in New York, adorning the… Read More

Black cloth, embossed ruling at fore-edges of covers, gilt lettering on front cover & spine, t.e.g. (minor bumping to corners, some rubbing, edgewear), still a VG- largely unopened copy. First edition of this exceedingly scarce and decidedly unusual work incorporating the evolutionary theories of Darwin, Alfred Russell Wallace, Lyell, and others, with a Christian religion recognizing the significant impact of Anglo-Saxon innovation and energy. This volume concludes his objective that science and religion are carrying man onwards, and leading to a new universe once they have become integrated. It provides a fascinating artifact of the impact of evolutionary thought in the early 20th century
