This volume is described in the Introduction as "a valuable manual to Ping-Pong, for in it an expert player tells why and how he plays the game and tells it in language that a novice can understand and profit by. One finds a clear exposition of stroke technique, tactics, grips and all the essentials of play told with the enthusiasm that is necessary to success.

Boston: Monroe et Companie, 1840. Troisieme edition, 12mo, 333 pp, in contemporary full calf with black spine label. Edited anonymously by Longfellow, first published in Portland, Maine in 1830. A very good copy with light bumping to corners, one chip to spine label. Contains 18 short dramatic works (in French). Longfellow taught at Bowdoin College in the late 1820s and while there translated several textbooks from French, Italian, and Spanish.

Near fine. Undated manuscript document in which Thomas Lewis (1720-1800), Justice of the Peace for Burke County, Georgia, certifies that Ezekiel Airidge "has take the Oath of allegiance to the State and is thereby intitled to all the Benefits & Priviliges of a free Citizen of the same." Lewis was one of the founders of Waynesboro, Georgia and commanded a battalion of the Burke County Militia (established in 1774). He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1796. The 1790 census lists an Ezekiel Akridge or Akeridge in Burke County. He appears to have been born around 1760 in Georgia and to have served in the Revolutionary War while living in Clarke County. The document measures 3.75" x 7.75" and has old folding creases; else about fine.

Biography of Margaret King, a Canadian-born trained nurse who joined the China Inland Mission in 1896 and worked to promote the welfare of Chinese women and girls of all social classes. She was instrumental in the founding of the Nanjing Bible College for Women in 1912.

Account of homesteading in the high desert of the East Mojave. The Sharps filed their claim in 1913. As was the case with most homsteaders in the region, they found they couldn't make a reliable living from the land, but they continued to try, even as the author's hsuband went to work for the Sagamore Mine,the Rock Springs Land and Cattle Company, and the Santa Fe Railroad in Needles (among others). Sharp offers a vivid picture of community life, as well as interesting details of mining and ranching.
