Has a very unusual bookplate, The Johnnycake Trail Collection to restore a flood damaged library./None. General Burnside fell out of favor after his fiasco at Fredericksburg. But somehow (political influence?) he stayed on to command the Ninth Corps. He left at least things for history - his sideburns and the name of the bridge across Antietam Creek. Eight maps and eight illustrations all present. The plate and portraits are as nice as I have seen. Nevins I-181.

EXTREMELY RARE WAR DATED ARMY MANUAL. Covers pontoons, sieges, sapping, mining, batteries. Many illustrations, no foldouts. SIGNED by Charles N. Kent in 1863, may be a soldier. Engineering troops were invaluable, but they got little attention in later narratives. An example of their incredible work was the rapid movement of Sherman's Army through the swamps of Northeast Georgia and South Carolina on his way to Columbia.

NY: Savas Beatie, 2007. Second Edition, First Printing. Hard Cover. VG+/VG+. Fantastic book! Loaded with myriad maps of this pivotable battle. When a situation changed the author added a new map to show the what has occurred. This make the flow of the campaign easy to follow and the illustrations fit hand in glove with the excellent narrative. Gottfried gets down to the regiment level in his drawings but the reader is not overwhelmed with confusing illustrations. This a second edition without the colored maps.

This edition physically larger than the first edition. Equally scarce. In Tall Cotton - 69: "The best study of a Maryland unit. Author was one of few who admitted robbing dead soldiers." Nevins I-95. Coulter 192: " His unit served primarily in the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia. It did service at Gettysburg." Howes 226. Philadlphia: Jas. B. Rodgers, 1865. VG, small piece missing on bottom of spine. Tight and square./None. A really rare manual dealing with medications when there were horrible theories on how to treat diseases. Paine believed in treating the disease and leaving other parts of the body that seemed OK alone. Book signed by a Dr. H. Williams, May 1868. He has written and highlighted with pencil some passages. Not in any of my references. It is no wonder why ill soldiers skipped sick call because the "cure" could be worse than the malady.

Rest VG./None. Very little found on this gifted Confederate general. He was controversial and argumentative which cost him in his military career. "He was known as an aggressive leader, being severely strict, deeply religious and having dry, sarcastic humor. He was brother-in-law to Stonewall Jackson, a close friend to both James Longstreet and Joseph E. Johnston, but disagreements with both Robert E. Lee and Braxton Bragg cost him favor with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Although his military ability was well respected, he was underutilized by the end of the Civil War on account of these political feuds." Wikipedia Not in any common bibliographies.

Richmond, VA: Confederate States of America, Navy Department, 1865. First. None. VG+. Not disbound, a stand alone publication. No covers. See Pictures. 12 pages./None.. CONFEDERATE IMPRINT. Parrish & Willingham 1684. Multiple communications by the Secretary of the Navy Mallory and Governor Vance of North Carolina concerning the supposed stealing of the Welsh coal meant for the steamer Advance by Confederate Navy personnel. This forced the Advance (ship belonging to North Carolina) to fuel with substandard North Carolina coal which caused her be captured by the Federals because her capabilities were halved. Seems there could be better things to argue about this late in the War. However, there are tabulations in the letter detailing the prizes captured in 1864 by the Confederate steamers Tallahassee and Chickamauga. The Tallahassee was a very successful steamer that year. She burnt 16 and scuttled another 10 vessels.

A report from Colonel Imboden who was stationed in VA and what was to become WVA. Tells of an incident whereas a Confederate was threatened by General Milroy, USA, with his life for guerrilla activity and Milroy demanded $14.72 in damages!!!. Imboden states this is not uncommon, but strange it deserves Davis' attention. The Federals meant business in dealing with this "guerrilla warfare." For the $14.72 the citizen was putting his home and life on line. Noncompliance would result in his home being burned and himself shot! Imboden made general while serving mostly in the Valley area. He last commanded an irregular cavalry unit.
