An account of the 'progress' of African American people in the US, intended to favourably sway foreign opinion. While acknowledging the devastating legacy of the slave trade and the reconstruction era, the pamphlet argues that in recent years (from the late 1940s) positive change has occurred socially, culturally and economically for black people. It cites higher literacy rates and school attendance, positive representation by Hollywood and in the national press, as well as better jobs and higher incomes, with education and legislation identified as the way forward. Heavily foxed at edges and beginning, then occasional spots and a few grubby finger prints, else, tight. A good+ copy. Copac lists 8 copies (Bishopsgate Library, the six legal deposit libraries, and UCL). In the 'Bibliographical Note,' which closes the book, Roth observes that the 'above pages are based almost in their entirety upon contemporary pamphlets and engravings in the collection of the Author'. Indeed, the historian and editor of the Encyclopaedia Judaica left his books and manuscripts from his unrivalled collection of Judaica to the University of Leeds. Edward Goldston had a hand in the Mandrake Press, which published Roth's only novel, Iscariot (1929).

Else, tight. In Barbara Kaiser's spectacular wraparound dust jacket: spine sunned, creasing and nicking, minor colour leaching to reverse, still, the panels wonderfully bright (and brash). A robust copy of Carter's postmodern tour de force. Good+/ good+ Nights at the Circus won the 1984 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, alongside J. G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun.

A brief, but dense and sprawling, treatise on love, extracted from Bates' unfinished novel, which "was for a long time entitled Sons Without Mothers, which is how Proust once described homosexuals," but which grew "to be about so many more things than homosexuality" (Foreword). Bates touches on Shakespeare, jazz, Christianity, Communism and contemporary race relations. With a printed dedications: "For E.
