[Washington]: Distributed by United States Information Service, [1952?]. 25 x 18cm, pp. 32. Amply illustrated. Dark blue wrappers lettered in white, stapled. Edgewear, a little scuffing, numerous dents to rear wrapper. Staples show a little rust. Else, clean and bright. Very good. Scarce in the trade. An account of the 'progress' of African American people in the US, intended to favourably sway foreign opinion. While acknowledging the devastating legacy of the slave trade and the reconstruction era, the pamphlet argues that in recent years (from the late 1940s) positive change has occurred socially, culturally and economically for black people. London: Edward Goldston Ltd, 1933. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 110, [2] + b/w frontis. Black paper boards with paper title labels. Top and fore-edges rough cut. Labels foxed and tanned. Heavily foxed at edges and beginning, then occasional spots and a few grubby finger prints, else, tight. A good+ copy. Copac lists 8 copies (Bishopsgate Library, the six legal deposit libraries, and UCL). In the 'Bibliographical Note,' which closes the book, Roth observes that the 'above pages are based almost in their entirety upon contemporary pamphlets and engravings in the collection of the Author'. Indeed, the historian and editor of the Encyclopaedia Judaica left his books and manuscripts from his unrivalled collection of Judaica to the University of Leeds. Edward Goldston had a hand in the Mandrake Press, which published Roth's only novel, Iscariot (1929).
