Good. 8vo, pp. xxi, 182, appendix, 127, five cattle and pig plates to rear, in original blue boards, these recovered some time ago in pale green paper, title on label appended to spine, boards grubby and fraying, spine tanned, owners' names to ffep and title pages, ink stains on the latter, one of which goes through two more pages, errata slip bound-in and another loosely inserted, some tanning and marks to early pages, thereafter quite clean, dusty to the top and uncut fore edges, a few ink margin lines and the odd foxing mark but very much the exception, mild offsetting throughout, the map of Dublin 1610 has a 3" tear to the right margin and some faint offsetting, that of Ireland with a tiny tear confined to the margin and again, some faint off-setting, the animal plates to the rear also have some off-setting, binding tight. Rare.

Presumably for use in shipping offices, these official guides and albums are usually found in a distressed state through overuse and when superseded by a new edition they were either further neglected or discarded completely. A rare survivor.

Presumably the money put aside for the proof-reader was diverted to the legal department! The blurb tells us that this biography is the result of five years' work. Its scarcity may be a result of the legal problems. A few minor tears and abrasions to price-clipped d.j., contents as new

Various. 8vo, pp. 51, with three pages of advertising at rear, stiff burgundy cloth covered card with gilt device and lettering, spine faded, corners rubbed, tanned endpapers, author's photograph somewhat carelessly pasted onto ffep, signed and dedicated by the author, interior largely crisp and clean, small creases to top corners of two pages, with many illustrations after various famous artists of the day (Millais, Birket Foster, Dore, Alma Tadema, Faed, etc.), binding tight. Although undated, the preface to the second edition states that it was produced just three months after the first, which was published in 1875. Hall's editorship of the Art Journal would have given him access to the artworks included in this volume, although the inclusion of a work by Millais would have surprised the artist; Hall had heavily critisised the Pre-Raphaelite movement during his tenure at the Journal. Rare with a signed photograph of the author.
