First Edition, and very scarce on the market, with no copies in auction records. ukasiewicz's first book, on the principle of contradiction in Aristotle's writings, marks his earliest attempt to "open up on logic vistas comparable to those opened in geometry by the introduction of non-Euclidian systems" (McCall, Polish Logic, 1920-1938, p. 2). ukasiewicz, a Polish logician and philosopher, introduced mathematical logic into Poland and was one of the principal founders, architects and teachers of the Warsaw school of logic. (2) Autograph letter signed, in French, most likely to G. Secretan, manufacturer of scientific instruments; includes sheet with drawings of Mars. 4pp. on 3 sheets. Donville, 9 October 1892. Very good. Excellent illustrated manuscript and letter by Lucien Rudaux, one of the founders of modern space art, who was the first to create accurate images of our moon and Mars. He was the author of Sur les autres mondes (1937), a classic work containing over 400 illustrations of our solar system's planets and moons. "Never before had readers seen…

Description:
London, 1753. Cochin, Charles Nicolas (1715-90) and Jérôme Charles Bellicard (1726-86). Observations upon the antiquities of the town of Herculaneum, discovered at the foot of Mount Vesuvius . . . vii, 236, [4]pp. 42 engraved plates. London: D. Wilson and T. Durham, 1753 [sic]. Modern full morocco gilt. Light toning but very good. First Edition in English. The publication date on the title is certainly an error, as the English edition was translated from the French edition of 1754. Cochin, an engraver, and Bellicard, an architect, visited Herculaneum circa 1750 during a tour of Italy led by Madame de Pompadour's brother, Poisson de Vandières. Their book, published in both French and English editions, helped to generate a great deal of interest in the Herculaneum ruins, particularly the theater, which was the first of the buildings at Herculaneum to be excavated. The many illustrations include a plan of the theater (showing the numerous trenches dug by Alcubierre and his workers) and images of…

London, 1791. Herschel, William (1738-1822). On nebulous stars, properly so called. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 81, part 1 (1791): 71-88. With: Home, Everard (1756-1832). Observations on certain horny excrescences of the human body. In ibid.: 95-105. Whole volume, 4to. vi, [2], 127, [1], 26, iv, 129-438, [2, incl. errata]pp. 10 engraved plates. 275 x 215 mm. Calf gilt ca. 1791, spine rubbed, hinges cracked, corners worn. Very good, clean copy. Engraved bookplate of John Douglas, Bishop of Salisbury (1721-1807). First Editions, journal issues. Herschel's paper records his observation in 1790 of the planetary nebula now known as NGC 1514, which caused him to reconsider his hypothesis that all nebulae were in fact star clusters disguised by distance. NGC 1514 "is so close to Earth that William was able to see the central star that in fact is always present in a planetary nebula. Accordingly, William classified the object as a nebulous star. Marveling at what he saw, he…

London: A. Millar & D. Wilson; T. Payne, 1752. Pringle, John (1707-82). Observations on the diseases of the army, in camp and garrison. xxiii, 431pp. London: A. Millar and D. Wilson; T. Payne, 1752. 207 x 129 mm. Calf gilt ca. 1752, rebacked preserving original spine, corners a bit worn. Scattered faint foxing, but very good. The Haskell F. Norman copy, with his bookplate; 19th-century bookplate of E. G. Graham Little. First Edition. Pringle, Physician-General to the British Army from 1744 to 1752, was the founder of modern military medicine. His Observations "laid down the true principles of military sanitation and the ventilation of hospital wards. Pringle was one of the pioneers of the antiseptic idea, showed that jail fever and hospital fever are one and the same, did much for the better ventilation of ships, barracks, jails and mines, correlated the different forms of dysentery and gave the name influenza to that dread disease. This work [was] the source-book of all subsequent writers"…

First Edition. Herschel and South, friends since student days and co-founders of the Royal Astronomical Society (1820), collaborated on double-star research between 1821-23, publishing this catalogue of double (binary) stars in 1824 which earned them the Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society over such competitors as Bessel, Struve and Pond. Herschel would eventually prepare a catalogue of 10,300 double stars, devise important computational methods in relation to double stars, and generally establish double-star astronomy in England. Outer margin of first plate trimmed affecting the plate number only, otherwise a very good, crisp copy. Inscription in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper. First Edition, a desirable example with hand-colored plates, which are not present in all copies. Treutler obtained his licentiate in medicine from the University of Leipzig with this thesis on parasitic worms, in which he identified some hitherto undescribed species (Tenia albopunctata, Hamularia lymphatica and Hexathyridio pinguicula) and discussed the diseases they cause in their human hosts. The hand-colored illustrations include a transverse section of a human brain infected with Tenia in…

Contained in an extract from The Lancet 2, no. 302 (June 13, 1828), consisting of pp. 321-336. 224 x 150 (uncut). Disbound. Minor toning but very good. First Edition, journal issue. Blundell, a British obstetrician, was the first to perform a human-to-human blood transfusion in which the patient survived. "Blundell established the most fundamental points in transfusion, including the incompatibility of interspecies transfusion and the method of indirect transfusion. With his descriptions of about ten cases over a ten-year period, Blundell revived interest in blood transfusion after a century-long hiatus" (Garrison-Morton.com 2017). ). The paper's two illustrations show Blundell's "Gravitator," a transfusion apparatus that was used throughout the 19th century.
