Oak Park: Library Book Club, 1984. Paperback. 16mo. Stiff tan wrappers. viii, 98pp. Numerous illustrations. Very good. Description:
Washington, DC: Robert Armstrong, 1853. Hardcover. Small 4to. Original blind-embossed brown cloth with modern black cloth tape spine. 86pp. Frontisiece. Good plus. Although internally tight and near fine, the binding corners are bumped and the spine bears modern black cloth tape; lacks rear flyleaf. A tight, decent first edition in the striking boards bearing a deeply blind-embossed "He Still Lives" and "Daniel Webster" ornament and superb steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait "Engraved by W.H. Dougal, from a Daguerreotype by Whipple." Interesting nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf: "Presented to E.G. Ryan Esqr / for his little son / by Jas. L. Woodside / Washington May 1854." Edward George Ryan (1810-80) was a well-known lawyer, judge and politician of Madison, Wisconsin, while Woodside was an obscure government official who served as clerk of the House Committee of Claims.
