Written under Tucker's pen name Edward William Sidney - 2 vols. in one. Tinted top edge. No internal marks - edge worn. Supressed book which Harwell lists as one of the most important for the Confederacy's demand for "states rights" over the imposed laws of the Federal government. He dreamt of a South that would be separate from the North and its tariffs where the Southern states with their slaves would rule over their own idyllic way of life. This argument for sectionalism was influential extending to his relative John Randolf and to the thought of John C. Calhoun. Later when he moved to Missouri, he wanted to keep those with Yankee accents on the other side of the Mississipi. The explanatory introduction written apparently before secession became a fact quotes Calhoun and implies Jefferson Davis was too weak in dealing with the growth of the North.
