In the unclipped dust jacket. pp. 266, w/ bibliography. Illustrated throughout with duotone plates. Bar a faint bump to lower front tip, an excellent copy, in like wrapper. Although no edition statement as such, this appears to be a later reissue, with a later photograph of Newhall to the rear inner jacket panel and a higher price of $50, vs $22.50 for the earlier issue.

Tokyo: Tosei-sha, 2004. First edition. Hardcover. As New/fine. Landscape format (23.5cm x 31cm). 129 numbered and dated b&w photographs, taken in the 1990s of mainly urban scenes in China. Captions in Japanese, with a moving afterword in English by Kitai, on his birth in Japanese occupied Manchuria in December 1944 and his parents' subsequent return to Japan in 1945. Signed by Kitai to title page. His renown outside Japan has grown in recent years, and critics see him as a pioneering influence on Japanese photography of the 60s, including the Provoke movement.

A visually inventive compilation of colour photographs of nudes and b&w self portraits by Kishin Shinoyama, Daido Moriyama and Tadashi Krahashi accompany the text. 8vo (19.5cm x 13cm) Softcover in slipcase. Gatefold pictorial card wrap to front, blank gatefold to rear. Cover with the hand around the cover design, mirrors earlier Yokoo covers with pointing fingers. pp. 246. Minor crease along spine edge and to front gatefold, minor rubs, very good with original obi band which has a closed tear to rear, enclosed in later protective glassine wrapper, no foxing, pages clean and tight. Slipcase dulled, otherwise very good.
