Pocket travelling Diptych Sundial, made of fruitwood and paper, 2 3/4 x 1 3/4", hinged, opening to show two decorative hand colored sides (secured at the bottom with metal staples of some kind), with thread, or gnomon meant to cast a shadow on the dials when open. On the bottom is a two-column list of 48 cities, 47 in Europe, and New York. [Augsburg or Nuremberg, ca. 1780-1821].
Made for travelers by the enterprising David Beringer (1756-1821) in either Augsburg, or Nuremberg, Germany, depending on when it was made, as he was in the former in 1776, and the latter by 1798. The list of cities on the lid is soiled, and there is a small piece of paper from the extreme top left hand column rubbed away, taking a few letters. Still, a colorfull and lovely little instrument. With hooks and eyes.

Description:
A FINE PASTEL OF 18-YEAR-OLD POLLY MARSH, NEW MILFORD, CONNECTICUTSCHIPPER, Gerritt (1775-ca. 1830), Dutch-born artist in America. [MARSH, Polly, nee Sherwood, subject (Oct. 13, 1788-March 24, 1863), so identified on verso]. A fine miniature watercolor pastel portrait on paper of Polly Marsh, of New Milford, Connecticut, 5 1/2 x 4 1/2", inside what looks to be a period frame, with what appears to be new glass. N.p., n.d., [New Milford, Connecticut? 1805-1807].
Based on Schipper's dates in Connecticut, Miss Marsh would have been a teenager when she was painted, 19 at the outside. She was born in New Milford, Litchfield County, Connecticut, where she seems to have lived her entire life; where she married, died, and is buried. Hers is a bust portrait in profile, hair up in a bun, wearing a white dress with puffed sleeves, frilly at the neck. Polly was the daughter of Polly and Daniel Sherwood, of New Milford, her father a mason by trade. Daniel enlisted in 1776, and served in the 2nd Regt., Conn.… Read More

Description:
A JUVENILE ANDREW WYETH WATERCOLOR "PORTRATE [sic] FROM LIFE" OF GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESENTED TO HIS GRANDFATHER
WYETH, Andrew (1917-2009). American artist. Watercolor portrait on brownish paper of George Washington, 9 1/2 x 10 1/2", inside frame. Frontal head-and torso watercolor of a bewigged Washington inside wide ornamental wreath with red bow at the top; inscribed to his grandfather from "Andy" N.p., n.d. [Chadds Ford, Pa.: ca. 1925?].
A safe guess is that this was painted when Wyeth's age was still in single digits, ca. 1925? Apparently George Washington was not far from Wyeth's mind growing up in the Brandywine Valley, close to where Washington's Continental Army fell to General Howe's British forces on September 11, 1777. His 1930 large oil painting, entitled, In a Dream I Meet George Washington, was purchased by the Brandywine River Museum in 1991, and in 1954 he painted Washington and Lafayette. Washington was also a subject for his father N. C. Wyeth. This juvenile watercolor… Read More

[caption-title]. 8vo, pp. 4, unbound, uncut, as issued. [Washington, D. C., 1833]. First Edition. Apparently unrecorded. An interesting piece of post office ephemera illuminating the rapid expansion of the Post Office Department, here covering the limits of the geographical United States. Issued under Barry's signature, it illustrates his concern about cleaning up the Post Office Department which had been under investigation since 1831, and which by 1834-5 would be the target of investigations by both houses of Congress.
