PETER McGILL (1789-1860). McGill was a Scottish-born Quebecois politician and businessman. He was President of the Bank of Montreal and also founded Canada’s first railroad company. There’s a district of Montreal named for McGill, though McGill University is named for someone else. ALS. 2pgs. March 26, 1834. Montreal. An autograph letter signed “Peter McGill”. McGill wrote to a James Baxter, McGill about the British American Land Company, an entity that was established in 1832 to purchase and develop lands in eastern Canada. “Dear Sir I am in receipt of your letter of 23 int for which I thank you. I am fully aware of the importance of the matters to which you advert, and you may rest assured that the Representatives of the Land Company will attend immediately to the ameleorations you suggest. QUEEN AMALIE AUGUSTE (1801-1877). Amalie was a Princess of Bavaria, the daughter of King Maximilian I, and Queen of Saxony. Amalie married King John of Saxony in 1822, and they had nine children, including the future King Albert of Saxony. ALS. 1pg. N.d. [circa 1853-1854]. N.p. [likely Dresden]. An autograph letter signed “A” by Queen Amalie of Saxony. Responding to a prior correspondence, Amalie discusses her recent poor health and a visit from her oldest son Albert and his wife Karola. The letter is written on both sides of an envelope and is accompanied by an English translation on a separate sheet: “Dear Therese, Pardon me that I have no yet answered your first letter & that I only today reply to the last. Description:
QUEEN MARY OF TECK (1867-1953). Mary was married to George V and Queen of the United Kingdom from 1910 to 1936. She was the mother of Kings Edward VIII and George VI. SB. 255pg. Christmas 1939. No place. A book The Queen’s Book of the Red Cross inscribed “To Mrs. Moore from Mary R Christmas 1939” on the first free endpage. The Queen mentioned in the book title is not Mary, but Queen Elizabeth (aka the Queen Mother), and there is a facsimile of her writing. The book was a fundraiser for the Red Cross shortly after Great Britain entered World War II, and it includes messages from the Queen and fifty British authors and artists. There is a light toning box to the signature page. The spine is sunned, the once blue boards have lightened and the interior pages that include some color illustrations are in fine condition.
