Description:
New York: S. Whiting & Co. No. 118 Pearl Street, J. Seymour, print, 1811. 8vo. (8 3/8 x 5 inches). 44pp. Bound to style in half red straight grained morocco, period marble paper boards. Hamilton's proposal for a national bank. This controversial proposed financial measure was accepted only after much debate on its constitutionality and in spite of stiff opposition by Jefferson and others. The Bank was run capably throughout its 20 year charter and was instrumental in managing the critical issue of public debt. Despite Secretary Gallatin's strong support, the charter was not renewed, with serious consequences for the country. Evans 22998. American Imprints 24307.

Description:
Rome: Lorenzo Lazaro alle Covervile, 1809. Oblong folio. 10 1/2 x 15 7/8 inches). Engraved throughout: title and 50 plates, by Pinelli. Contemporary dark green half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, small decorative green morocco title label Provenance: John Thomas Mott (Barningham, Norfolk, armorial bookplate) First edition of the first and best known collection of views of the picturesque costume of Italy. This highly evocative series was a justified 'best-seller' - published in various forms from 1808 to 1828, every 'grand tourist' would return with a copy of this work. The present example, a first edition, shows a crispness that tends to be lost with the later reprints. The images are by turns joyful, comedic, dramatic, tragic and work-a-day. All are engraved with a sureness of line and matchless sense of composition that are the hallmarks of Pinelli's work. The final plate represents the artist himself: Pinelli relaxes, his work done, seated on some Roman masonry, two dogs for… Read More

Description:
Paris: Mabileau & Co, 1913. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling in the left margin. Proof, Grand Prix de France 1913, LeMans Pablot sur Delage. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights… Read More

Description:
London: Published by I. & W. Macgavin, No. 107 New Bond Street, 1808. Coloured aquatint. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a small brown mark in the lower left corner of plate. Slight creasing through center of image. Image size: 13 1/2 x 20 inches. A pretty view of Ramsgate Pier, from Philippe Loutherbourg's great work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This impressive aquatint is plate two of Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This accomplished text is comprised of six large aquatint views engraved after Loutherbourg's acclaimed paintings. The work, which was first engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler, was later re-engraved in 1808 by J. Hill. Reminiscent of Rowlandson's superb paintings, this image depicts the stormy docks of Ramsgate pier. While a group of hardy sailors converse at ease, a party of three figures are battered by the fierce winds that beat the shoreline. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt,… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: E.C. Biddle, 1837. Hand-coloured lithograph. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. The devoted and audacious wife of the famous Iowa chief Mahaskah, Flying Pigeon or Rant-Che-Wai-Me accompanied her husband, along with his other wives, on his 1824 trip to Washington to visit President Monroe. Upon her return, she organized a meeting of Iowa women to whom she recounted her trip to the White House. Of Mahaskah's many wives, Flying Pigeon was his favorite, and she bore him a son, Mahaskah the Younger, who would later become a respected Iowa chief. McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portraits are largely based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the… Read More

Vienna: Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1856. 'Nature printed' in brown ink, with titling and imprint in black, by the Vienna Hof- und Staatsdruckerei. A beautiful example from "most important work produced by nature printing ever published" (Stafleu). To the modern eye this plate has an almost photographic beauty to it, which, in aesthetic terms, foreshadows the work of the great early-20th century photographers such as Man Ray. However, this achievement is almost certainly incidental as von Ettingshausen's intention was to present a detailed anatomical portrait using the highly exacting method of nature printing. John Lindley writes "Attempts were long since made to obtain Botanical portraits by printing from the plants themselves, flattened and otherwise prepared for the purpose... The process of the Imperial Printing Office [Hof- und Staatsdruckerei] at Vienna, to which the name of Nature-Printing has been happily applied.. is a great improvement upon the old method, inasmuch as it represents not only… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Megarey, 1822. Aquatint, coloured by hand, by John Hill, after W.G. Wall. In the summer of 1820 the Irish-born and trained landscape artist William Guy Wall (1792-after 1864) went on an extended sketching tour of the Hudson River Valley and its environs. A selection of Wall's watercolors recording sights on his tour was engraved by the master printmaker John Hill (1770-1850) in The Hudson River Portfolio, published in New York City by Henry J. Megarey between 1821 and 1825. Long considered a cornerstone in the development of American printmaking and landscape painting, its twenty topographical views cover roughly 212 miles of the 315-mile course of the Hudson River. This undertaking paved the way for a wider public appreciation of landscape in the United States. The first series of prints to make Americans aware of the beauty and sublimity of their own scenery, the seminal Portfolio helped to stimulate national pride and cultural identity The commentary notes that: "This view of the… Read More

The Curators of the Teyler's Museum in Haarlem, Holland made their copy of the original work available for use as a model. The Museum, founded in 1778, bought their copy through Audubon's son as part of the original subscription in 1839. London, 1714. Broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Disbound. Small folio. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. An early British petitionary leaflet calling for greater enforcement of customs laws for imported goods. The author charges that most consignments of foreign goods are now being made to "Naturalized Foreigners and Unfreemen," who are not under the same obligations as Freemen, who state in their oath "not to Colour of Cover the Goods of Aliens." If "no Remedey be given," it is argued, "all Persons will be discouraged from taking their Freedoms, and few will be left of Substance to perform the necessary Service in the Government of [London]." Description:
Augsburg: Matthäus Seutter, 1740. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. An excellent example of the third state of Seutter's important map of the American northeast with the famous 'Restitutio' view of New York City. A fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present plate was first published by Seutter in 1730, and `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show ... the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.' There are three states with Seutter's imprint: the first with no mention of his imperial appointment, and the second state mentioning that he is Imperial geographer. In the third state (as here), dating to 1740 onwards, the title has been altered again, this time to include mention of the privilege that he has been granted. After Seutter's death his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam, 1697. Copper-engraved map. Small inset of New Zealand within the cartouche. Rare issue of Allard's map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. "The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675" (Burden). Significantly, however, Allard corrects the mapping of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley. "The former are entirely re-engraved as are the nearby waterways off the St. Lawrence River including Lake Champlain, which is moved south-west. Lake Superior is now enclosed to the west as is Lac des Puans, which is renamed Lac Illinois, placing the previous toponym correctly in Green Bay. To the west an entirely new and more recent depiction of the Mississippi valley is inserted. This is derived from that of Louis Hennepin ... published in 1697" (Burden). This is Burden's second state, with a ruled border surrounding the New Zealand inset but without the textual… Read More
