Hamilton's proposal for a national bank. This controversial proposed financial measure was accepted only after much debate on its constitutionality and in spite of stiff opposition by Jefferson and others. The Bank was run capably throughout its 20 year charter and was instrumental in managing the critical issue of public debt. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. This impressive aquatint is plate two of Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This accomplished text is comprised of six large aquatint views engraved after Loutherbourg's acclaimed paintings. The work, which was first engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler, was later re-engraved in 1808 by J. Hill. Reminiscent of Rowlandson's superb paintings, this image depicts the stormy docks of Ramsgate pier. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. The devoted and audacious wife of the famous Iowa chief Mahaskah, Flying Pigeon or Rant-Che-Wai-Me accompanied her husband, along with his other wives, on his 1824 trip to Washington to visit President Monroe. Upon her return, she organized a meeting of Iowa women to whom she recounted her trip to the White House. Of Mahaskah's many wives, Flying Pigeon was his favorite, and she bore him a son, Mahaskah the Younger, who would later become a respected Iowa chief. McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America' has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. In the summer of 1820 the Irish-born and trained landscape artist William Guy Wall (1792-after 1864) went on an extended sketching tour of the Hudson River Valley and its environs. A selection of Wall's watercolors recording sights on his tour was engraved by the master printmaker John Hill (1770-1850) in The Hudson River Portfolio, published in New York City by Henry J. Megarey between 1821 and 1825. Long considered a cornerstone in the development of American printmaking and landscape painting, its twenty topographical views cover roughly 212 miles of the 315-mile course of the Hudson River. This undertaking paved the way for a wider public appreciation of landscape in the United States. The petitioners ask that Parliament require that "the Length and Breadth of all mixt and medley Broad Cloth, may not be ascertain'd at the Place of Making, but at the Place of Sale; where both Seller and Buyer may see that equal Justice is done between them." The document is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons around the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. If "no Remedey be given," it is argued, "all Persons will be discouraged from taking their Freedoms, and few will be left of Substance to perform the necessary Service in the Government of [London]." Augsburg: Matthäus Seutter, 1740. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. An excellent example of the third state of Seutter's important map of the American northeast with the famous 'Restitutio' view of New York City. A fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present plate was first published by Seutter in 1730, and `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show ... the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.' There are three states with Seutter's imprint: the first with no mention of his imperial appointment, and the second state mentioning that he is Imperial geographer. In the third state (as here), dating to 1740 onwards, the title has been altered again, this time to include mention of the privilege that he has been granted. Nuremberg: J. B. Homann, 1730. Copper engraving with original hand-colouring. An early map of Asia that includes the northern tip of Australia and Papua, New Guinea, by the celebrated German cartographer, J. B. Homann with a second ornate cartouche in the upper right, removed in other issues. Johann Baptiste Homann established in the early years of the 18th century the most successful map publishing firm in Germany. His prolific business, which his family continued after his death, dominated Germany's map market for over a century and produced some of the finest maps and atlases of the age. He started the firm in Nuremberg, and,in 1715, he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After his death in 1724, his son, Johann Christoph, assumed control of the firm and this is his issue ot his father's map of Asia. This is a lovely example includes the northern tip of Australia (Nova Hollandia) Carpentaria, Nova Britannia and the Marianas. Rare issue of Allard's map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. "The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675" (Burden). Significantly, however, Allard corrects the mapping of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley. "The former are entirely re-engraved as are the nearby waterways off the St. Lawrence River including Lake Champlain, which is moved south-west. Lake Superior is now enclosed to the west as is Lac des Puans, which is renamed Lac Illinois, placing the previous toponym correctly in Green Bay. To the west an entirely new and more recent depiction of the Mississippi valley is inserted. This is derived from that of Louis Hennepin ... published in 1697" (Burden).
