Description:
E. Edwards, Photo.: N. Y. Photo-Gravure Co, n. d.. Photogravure, 16 x 23.5 cm (image) , 27.5 x 34.5 cm (sheet). A fine photograph of the Chicago home of Franklin MacVeagh, at the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Shiller Street, designed by H. H. Richardson, who received the commission in July 1885. The house was completed in 1887, the year following Richardson's death. Franklin MacVeagh (1837-1934), was a Chicago banker and one-time Secretary of the Treasury under William Howard Taft. This photograph was apparently part of a series by the photographer E. Edwards of stately residences in Chicago. This stately residence was demolished in 1922.

London: Printed by J. Plymsell; for T. N. Longman, 1797, 1797. First edition. ESTC N12984. Some minor dust-soiling and spots in the text; edges rubbed; very good copy.. 2 vols, 8vo, contemporary quarter tree-calf, marbled paper boards, red morocco spine labels, gilt rules and lettering. Without the half-titles. Rachel Charlotte Biggs was acquainted with France when she traveled by herself there in 1792 to aid an aristocratic lady friend, during which time she witnessed the Revolution during its grim climax. Out of concern for their safety, Biggs and her companion moved from Paris north to Amiens and other nearby towns. At one point Biggs was under arrest on suspicion of being a spy. Her impressive memoir of this experience, in letters to her brother, is distinctly loyalist and dedicated with "extreme diffidence" to Edmund Burke. Biggs reports sympathetically on the effects of the Revolution on the lives of shopkeepers, clergy, women in convents, aristocrats (with whom she travels), farmers, et al.;… Read More

London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1801, 1801. First edition. Rothschild 1553; NCBEL II, 1595. Edges a little rubbed; some light foxing; very good copy.. 2 vols, 4to, contemporary half calf, blue paste-paper boards, red morocco spine labels, gilt rules and lettering. Frontis portrait. Without the half-titles and eight-page publisher's catalogue in volume two, but with the four pages of Stockdale's proposal for the publication of maps. A sweeping chronological history of the world in 540 pages, from the birth of Christ to 1800, told in the entertaining, informal style of Hester Lynch Piozzi (1741-1821). Retrospection was written and published to celebrate (and profit from) the turn of the century, for which Piozzi proposed a £1,000 advance. John Stockdale agreed to her terms, but Retrospection was not a commercial success. It is an early example of a history of the world by a woman - though not the first. It took Piozzi at least five years to complete.

London: Trübner & Co., 1887, 1887. First edition. Wolff 7188; Sadleir 3020a; NCBEL III, 1076. Fine copy.. 8vo, original dark blue cloth, gilt lettering. The third of six novels that William Hale White (1831-1913) wrote under the dual pseudonyms of Mark Rutherford and his imaginary editor Reuben Shapcott. White was fairly well known under his actual name as a journalist and translator of Spinoza, but apparently wanted to hide his identity as the author of novels that eloquently examine adversity in political radicalism, religious nonconformity and the ability of man to change or make a difference. The main character in The Revolution in Tanner's Lane is Zachariah Coleman, a printer, political radical and moderate Calvinist, who is lectured to by another activist when he expresses remorse about the lack of progress their movement had made: "Stop, stop, Mr. Coleman. Here is the mistake you make. Grant it all - grant your achievement is ridiculously small - is it not worth the sacrifice of two or… Read More

Chaalons' [i.e. Châlons-sur-Marne], 'pour la Communauté des Libraires', 1735, 1735. New edition, apparently unrecorded. Not found on OCLC or the Union Catalogue of France (CCFr). A fine copy.. 12mo, contemporary polished continental calf, marbled paper endpapers, blind-ruled borders, red morocco spine label, gilt decorations and lettering, a.e. stained red. Woodcut tailpieces. By the late 17th century, the French government attempted to regulate all aspects of printing and the distribution of books in and around Paris. In 1686 those regulations were codified in the Édit du Roy pour le Règlement des Imprimeurs et Libraires de Paris and the Édit du Roy pour le Règlement des Relieurs et doreurs de Livres. Further revisions were made 30 years later, and after some disagreements, two editions of the code were published in 1723 and 1731 in the form of a decree. The code was extended to all of France in 1744 and remained in effect until 1777. This edition is a provincially printed version… Read More

London: Chapman and Hall, 1863, 1863. Second edition, published shortly after the first. BAL 19258; cf. Smith, American Travelers Abroad, S200, which records an 1887 edition. Edges a little rubbed, but a fine, handsome copy.. 2 vols, 8vo, contemporary red quarter morocco, blind-stamped red cloth boards, gilt rules, decorations and lettering, marbled edges. With half-titles. A popular travel narrative about Rome by the American sculptor William Wetmore Story (1819-1895), who was a talented writer, as well. The title of "Roba," Story writes in the preface, is meant in its broadest interpretation: "Roba is everything - from rubbish and riff-raff to the most exquisite product of art and nature. This book is filled with Roba." Story writes in 22 chapters about Rome's street music, beggars, games, cafes, the famous monuments, festivals, etc. Roba di Roma went through numerous editions, many expanded and revised.

Description:
London: Printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, 1795, 1795. First edition. ESTC T57814 (four volumes); Garside, Raven & Schöwerling 1795:50; NCBEL II, 698. Very good copy.. 2 vols, 12mo, modern brown buckram, maroon morocco spine labels, gilt lettering, untrimmed. With half-titles. The only novel by Ann Yearsley (1753-1806), the interesting working class poet known as the "Bristol Milkmaid." The Royal Captives, based on the popular French tale of the man in the iron mask, uses the guise of a gothic thriller to examine favorite subjects of Yearsley's: class distinctions, political dissent, the misstreatment of women and the poor. Yearsley notes in her witty preface that she intentionally left the novel unfinished and implies that if the public demands it of her she will complete the tale. "Finis" is found at the end of volume two, but the novel was very popular and some months later Yearsley wrote and published two further volumes, not present here and much rarer the first two.
