Plantin Press for Limited Editions Club, 1959. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. Introduction by J. Frank Dobie. Slipcase has some minor stains, book very fine, signed by Everett Gee Jackson, illustrator. First edition thus. Limited to 1,500 copies. Zamorano Eighty 46: "Ramona, a maudlin, sentimental story is, of course not a great novel. But it is an exceedingly important California book for two reasons. A popular book, it spread the fame of California and no doubt inspired a considerable number of people to migrate here in the nineties and in the first two decades of this century. And, second, by exposing the abuses to which Southern California Indians were subjected, it resulted in numerous wholesome reforms in the administration of Indian affairs. The book continues to sell several thousand copies a year." BAL 10456. Baird-Greenwood 1296. Cowan p. 307n. Johnson, High Spots of American Literature pp. 46-47. Powell, California Classics.

Description:
Two volumes, bound in brown leather and marbled boards, both books very good, a beautiful set. Monterey edition. Deluxe edition seldom seen with 5 raised bands and different from the red morocco binding. Introduction by Susan Coolidge and illustrations by Henry Sandham. Powell, California Classics p. 277: Among the many editions of Ramona, two are outstanding. The Monterey edition of 1900 contains an introduction by Susan Coolidge which is one of the best things written about Mrs. Jackson. It is illustrated by Henry Sandham, the Canadian artist who had travelled with Mrs. Jackson in the early 1880 s and made field drawings to illustrate her Century articles. Sandham is the ideal portrayer of Southern California of that time. Zamorano Eighty 46: Ramona, a maudlin, sentimental story is, of course not a great novel. But it is an exceedingly important California book for two reasons. A popular book, it spread the fame of California and no doubt inspired a considerable number of people to migrate here…

First edition. Guns 1661: "Although this is a relatively recent book, it has become quite difficult to find. The author, like so many other New Mexicans, is very much in sympathy with Billy the Kid. He considers Pat Garrett a cold-blooded killer and cites many opinions to prove that he was a cattle thief and a coward who shot without giving his victim a chance. Although he is critical of Garrett's book, he repeats most of the legends in it created by Ash Upson and makes quite a few mistakes himself." Howes O142: "Portrays this controversial sinner as more sinned against than sinning." "aa" scarcity rating. Description:
Capital Book, 1926. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Book and dust jacket in very good condition. First edition. Merrill¿s Aristocrats. Guns 509: ¿Scarce.¿ ¿The author claims that Calamity Jane¿s real name was Jane Somers, that she was born in Princeton, Missouri, in 1851, and that she died August 2, 1903. He says that the stories that she served as a scout and guide are the invention of people who never knew her. The book contains a chapter on Joseph Slade and some stories about Doc Middleton.¿ Herd 607. Dobie p. 101: ¿The skill of Lewis F. Crawford of the North Dakota Historical Society made this a richer autobiography than if Arnold had been unaided. He was a squaw man, scout, trapper, soldier, deserter, prospector, and actor in other occupations as well as cowboy. He had a fierce sense of justice that extended to Indians. His outlook was wider than that of the average ranch hand.¿ Howes C872. Graff 912. Jennewein 95.
