Description:
Oxford University Press, 1980 8vo (24.5 cm), color front., XVI, 160 pp, 6 plates in color. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the front free leaf. From the blurb: "When Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" was published in 1714 its six full-page engraved plates showed that illustrations can elucidate, modify, and supplement text. During later periods, as taste and sensibility changed, the poem's illustrations reflected contemporary attitudes towards Pope's masterpiece. It was often illustrated in th 18th century, by among others Walker, Wale, Stothard, Burney, Hamolton, and above all by Fuseli, who also inspired three of his pupils to emulation. C. r. Leslie used the poem as the subject of a large, brilliant painting. Finally, in 1896, Aubrey Beardsley 'embroidered' a set of nine drawings for an edition of the poem that is the most famous of all. Robert Halsband's book, the first devoted to the subject, deals with all known… Read More

Description:
Yale University Press, 2005 4to (27.5 cm), 224 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "Five centuries ago a stunningly beautiful young man with flowing blond locks sat for a portrait by Raphael. In the artist's dynamic conception, Bindo Altoviti turns as if to speak to his Florentine bride, Fiammetta. Ardently admired over the years, as it is today, Raphael’s portrait was also coolly received by more than one influential critic who cast a shadow on its reputation. This gloriously illustrated book tells the story of the portrait’s creation and of its unexpected trajectory through history. Focusing on viewers’ responses to Bindo Altoviti, the book describes the transformation of the picture from a family treasure into a supposed self-portrait of the artist; its public display in Munich, where first it was celebrated, then dismissed by skeptics claiming that it was neither of nor by Raphael; and its acquisition by canny English dealers who lured the panel out of Nazi… Read More

Description:
Yale University Press, 2008 8vo (24 cm), XXII, 265 pp, plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (ownership signature on the front free end-paper). "Seizing the Hungarian throne at the age of fifteen, Matthias Corvinus, the "Raven King,” was an effervescent presence on the fifteenth-century stage. A successful warrior and munificent art patron, he sought to leave as symbols of his strategic and humanist ambitions a strong, unified country, splendid palaces, and the most magnificent library in Christendom. But Hungary, invaded by Turkey after Matthias's death in 1490, yielded its treasures, and the Raven King’s exquisite library of two thousand volumes, witness to a golden cultural age, was dispersed first across Europe and then the world. The quest to recover this collection of sumptuously illuminated scripts provoked and tantalized generations of princes, cardinals, collectors, and scholars and imbued Hungarians with the mythical conviction that the restoration of the… Read More

Harper, 1961 8vo (20.5 cm), XVIII, 214 pp. Printed wrappers (canceled stamp of an institutional library on the title, bookplates, several pen marks inside). "More than any other historian of the present day Hexter must be held responsible for the breaking of a circle of explanation, one which had prevailed fro three or four generations and which had come to constrict imagination and intellect alike. This was the convention which demanded that all historical change must be referred to the rise and fall of social classes, and most of English history to the rise of the middle classes. His critical work severs the stalk at the point where it springs out of the ground." (from the Foreword by Peter Laslett)
