Nash wrote this essay in response to "violent" outbreaks of labor unrest but refused to side with either employer or employee. "Capital will not always understand labor and labor cannot understand capital. Labor sins more through ignorance than intention; therefore a court having the confidence of capital and labor, rightly and intelligently administered, would be an efficient means, often, to adjust admicably the disputes and grievances of both. "The First-Prize Essay Awarded by the Boston Young Men's Christian Union. Small chips to front wrapper with library and pricing stamp at the top. A good + copy.

Ouseley was a British diplomatic attache to the United States from 1825 to 1832. With the help of Washington Irving, he published his survey of American political, economic and religious institutions in both the UK and US. In general, he gave America a highly favorable review. Boards rubbed and worn. Head of spine has one small chip. Internal text has occasional foxing and dampstains, but is generally clean.

Albany: C. Van Benthuysen, 1864. Private edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo. pamphlet. 13pp. Original light yellow wrappers, stitched as issued. This is a report to the New York legislature recommending that it oppose a bill authorizing state banks to become national banks. Drafted by four legislators, including Alexander Olcutt, the report voiced fears that New York would loose its ability to control and tax New York state banks. Light soiling to wrapper and one vertical crease mark. Overall, a very good copy.

Washington: A. O. P. Nicholson, 1855. Hardcover. Very good. Original dark brown blindstamped cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. 8vo. 381 pp, blank, [1]. A few spots and stains to front board, wear at the extremities. Dampstain on front endpapers and title page. Otherwise, a very good copy.

Baltimore: Health Office, January 1, 1837. Very good. One leaf, folded into a 4-page letter (each page approximately 8" x 10"). Printed report on first page only with address, postal mark, and the notation "Bill of Mortality from City of Baltimore Jany. 1837" on the last page. This report from the Secretary of the Baltimore Board of Health was addressed to the "Corporate Authorities of Providence Rhode Island." It grouped the 2,373 deaths that occurred within the city during 1836 by month, by male, female, "colored" free and slave, by age and by cause of death. 49% of all who died were under 6 years of age, although there were also 8 women (2 white and 6 free black) who were over 100 years old when they passed. Crease marks from folding, remnants of red wax seal and one small tear with no effect on text.

Ex-lib markings on front wrapper with one vertical crease mark. Text is clean.

Original brown blindstamped decorative cloth, gilt lettering on spine, and bevelled boards. This edition published in the same year as the London edition but without the two tinted plates and with erroneous "1856" date at the end of the preface. A few spots on the lower portion of front boards; minor dampstain at the top right of the page from front flyleaf to page 4, light foxing throughout. However, binding is tight, gilt lettering on spine is still very bright and the text is clean. Ascertained During a Visit to the States in the Autumn of 1865.

Brown coated endpapers. Wright American Fiction 1851-1875: 556. Frank Clifford was a Boston pharmacist who penned an adventure novel that appears to be heavily influenced by Jules Verne. In the narrative, Clifford places himself and his companions on board a steam yacht. Together they sail all over the world, visiting a number of locales where the raw ingredients of perfumes can be found. Along the way they encounter a number of perils and dramatic challenges, all the time discussing the ingredients of perfume and home remedies.
