Washington, D.C.: Office of War Information, (1943). Approximately 16" x 22" offset lithograph poster. Original mailing folds, trace edgewar, otherwise about near fine. A original OWI propaganda poster designed by Henry Koerner (1915-1991), an Austrian-born Jewish artist who fled the Nazi invasion for The United States in 1938 and went on to an accomplished career as a commercial painter in the magical realsim genre, illustrating a number of heralded covers for TIME magazine during the 1950's and 1960's. An exceptional and uncommon survivor among the prolific output of American wartime propaganda posters.

Columibia, Missouri, (1938). Large commercial scrapbook. 14" x 11" x 2" thick. Smooth brown vinyl over board panels with ornate relief design of a sailing ship above the tite "SCRAP / BOOK" to front. String binding at left margin holding 50 thin brown card leaves, the first 45 with contents moounted to rectos and versos throughout ; final five leaves blank. Contents include 39 original snapshot photographs along with dozens of travel publications (including many maps), postcards, clippings, a typed itinerary in cut scraps, etc... Maybe half a dozen articles perished from mountings, otherwise about very good condition. A dense scrapbook kept by a student of the all-women's Stephens College during a two-week trip from Columbia, Missouri into Texas and Mexico, then west to Los Angeles, up the Pacific coast and into Seattle before heading back east throuogh the Norther Plains states. In addition to the autor's signature, another gift inscription (not by the author) is present on the first endpaper. A sharp, signed copy of the first printing of Clara Claiborne Park's intimate memoir of raising an autistic daughter. String-bound at left margin. Wrappers fragile, flaking a bit at edges and stressed at string binding. Faint finger smudging, staining about edges of first text leaf, otherwise contents neat, bright. Overall very good. [WITH] Two tack-bound booklets of blueprint drawings (three prints in each, for a total of six blueprints). An early 20th Century trade catalog promoting the National Series of coal and wood burning furnaces produced by the Standard School Heater Company of Chicago to be utilized in forced air heating and ventilation systems in schools. Sales text promotes the products superior "sanitation" versus traditional classroom stoves and radiant heatres prevalent at the time and further notes the use of asbestos insulation. Gilt portrait illustration to front, scales of justice image to spine. No jacket (almost certainly as issued). INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR to first blank endpage: "TO JIM GRAMENOS: / I AM GRATEFUL / FOR YOUR INTEREST / IN ADVOCACY. MAY / IT CONTINUE / MOE LEVINE." Blind owners stamp below inscription. Trace edgewear to cloth, otherwise sharp and clean with bright gilt. Near fine. A long-out-of-print, scarce, and coveted text authored by arguably the most important and influential American trial attorney of the 20th Century, and one of the first to command massive financial awards in civil cases. [Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania]: National Steel Corporation, [ca. 1959]. Approximately 10" x 9" commercial binder. Green cloth over boards with "NATIONAL STEEL CORPORATION" in silver ink to front. Three ring metal snap-ring binder assembly mounted to interior holds a typed introduction sheet along with typed decriptive sheets and 13 rectangular (approximately 9" x 6") sample steel panels bound-in. All about very good. A stout and impressive sales demonstration binder prepared by the Weirton division of Pittsburgh based National Steel Corporation to showcase its line of zinc-coated sheet metal products treated with its Weirkote coating. The materials are undated, though archived newspaper issues suggest the product was launched in about 1959. The binder weighs nearly eight pounds and provides an impressive physical example of mid-20th Century industrial design and materials.

String binding holding 15 leaves with dozens of photographs, postcards, and ephemeral articles mounted, mostly to rectos. A blend of commerical postcards and original photographs (we count 26 original vernacular snapshots). Neat cursive notations throughout composing an approximately 700 word original travel narrative. Section of loss to exterior wood hinge assembly, string binding holes wearing or worn out, one leaf loose. Overall a neatly assembled and reasonably well preserved handmade production, about very good. A scrapbook forming an original, illustrated travel narrative of a young Dallas couple's August 1947 honeymoon in Missouri's Ozark region with identified places including Branson, Forsyth, Rockaway Beach, Lake Taneycomo, Roaring River State Park, Lake of the Ozarks, etc... St. Louis, Missouri and environs, (ca. 1958-1990). Two large commercial albums, the first about 15" x 12", the second slightly smaller. Purposed as scrapbooks holding dozens of ephemeral articles, clippings and more than 75 original photographs to the rectos and versos of about 50 brown paper leaves. Contents typically adhesive mounted to pages. Many contents loose or leaning in that direction. Milld hanlding wear, overall well preserved and each about very good. A pair of dense scrapbooks singularly documenting activites of the Lady Lions Council of Greater St. Louis, an organization which unified the 18 individual wives auxiallary clubs of the male-only Lions Club chapters in and around the city in April of 1958. The scrapbooks begin with the Council's inception and continue up until 1990. String binding through left margin holding 18 brown paper leaves. First 16 eaves with mounted clippings to rectos and versos above pencil drawings. Final two leaves with pencil drawings and one in crayon. Clippings often beginning to come loose, overall well presereved and about very good. A scrapbook compiling newspaper-cilpped panels by cartoonist Frank Webb featuring a visual drawing lesson taught with a letter of the alphabet as the first in a series of steps for learning to draw a face or character of Webb's imagining. Below all but one of the mounted clippings is an attempt, in pencil, in likely a couple different hands, to execute the drawings, which they pull off with varying degrees of competency (some are crude, some excellent) . A small archive of varied photographic, printed, and hand-executed material including 9 large original pencil or ink drawings, 2 original watercolors, 4 diazo-print blue line drawings, and 26 original photographs. Largest pieces fold out to about 13" x 20."All neatly folded into storarge dimensions of about 13" x 10" x 1/2." All about very good. A small archive of photographs, sketches, watercolors, etc..., design and reference material used in producing store and window displays in and around Seattle at mid-20th Century. One is signed "Fay Suttless" and one notes a location of "Bremers." Bremers was a department store in suburban Bremerton and the 1950 census locates a Fay Suttles who noted her occupation as "Display Artist" for "Bon Marche, suggesting she produced work for multiple stores in the area. Black muslin cloth over boards with "SNAPS" stamped in reflective silver ink to front, spine. 26 black paper leaves with a total of 100 black and white snapshot photographs loosely fit into corner mounts of rectos and versos. Prints uniform in size, each about 4 1/2" x 3 1/2." One slot wtihout a photograph, most prints with a barely discernible waviness, otherwise neat and well preserved. An uncommonly well-executed album of snapshots of Spokane and its regional environs circa-1946. Views consist of urban architecture (including one of the front of the long-demolished Union Pacific Rail Depot), several of a parade, nature scenes, mountains, etc...

[Miami, Florida], (1992). 38 jumbo drugstore print color snapshots, each approximately 6" x 4" on semi-gloss "KODAK" branded photo paper. Images with digital date stamp at lower right. All unmarked, about fine. More than three dozen original vernacular views of the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in or near Miami and shot on August 28, 1992, just four days on from its historic landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 Tropical Hurricane. At the time, it was the costliest and most destructive hurricane ever to hit Florida. The views here focus on a branch location of the department store Service Merchandise, likely the S. Dixie Highway location, according to our source for the photographs, the additional environs likely along the coastal highway which extends from Miami, south into the Florida Keys as State Highway 1. A searing primary glimpse into the aftermath of an historic Atlantic hurricane through the eyes of a retail worker attempting return to the job.

[Oklahoma City, Oklahoma], [1995]. 24 snapshot photographs. Each 6" x 4" glossy drugstore prints on Kodak-branded paper. All about fine. About a fillm roll's worth of snapshots of the Alfred P. Murrah building and its surrounding environs captured in the wake of its domestic terrorist bombing in April of 1995. The prints are undated, though a complete and professional destruction of its remains was carried out barely a month on from the April 19th bombing, placing these sometime in the interim.

[St. Louis, Missouri], [ca. 1940's-1980]. Approximately 400 photographs. Various dimensions, the majority 3 1/2" square snapshots about evenly split between color and black and white prints. With a few newspaper clippings. Approximately 50 prints trimmed (presumably to fit in a previous mounting). Acquired by us as a loose collection and now housed in mylar sleeves and clear album pages, all tidily stored in an archival binder. A wonderful archive of St. Louis vernacular photography chiefly capturing the interiors of at least two different City bars and the family who lived above them during the 1950's and 1960's. Piecing together dates and names infrequently written to print borders and versos has us confident in naming their source as a Mildred "Millie' Collier, nee Pinchback (1916-1982). Originally of Pocahontas, Arkansas, she came to St. Louis sometime after 1940 and seems to have begun working in bars shortly thereafter. [St. Louis, Missouri], [ca. 1940's]. About 195 snapshot photographs. Mostly black and white, a few color, drugstore prints with dimenions ranging from approximately 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" to 5" x 3 1/2." Generous verso notations in ink. A few prints with residue from a previous album mounting, otherwise all well preserved and about very good. Acquired by us a collection of loose prints and now tidily stored in archival clear album pages any mylar sleeves in a dust-proof binder. An evocative archive of snapshot photography, nearly 200 prints by or of a Dorothy Matteson (1918-2007) in about the early 1940's. Prints are spread across a few North City locations seemingly all within a few blocks of Fairgrounds Park, including an apartment balcony overlooking Sportsman's Park, a house (likely at 3522 Sullivan Ave.), and workplace at Gasen's Drug Store. Dorothy was married to a Robert Patteson (1912-2001) a City police who was away serving in World War II. Most of these appear to be photos taken to send to him… Read More

[Reno, Nevada], (1979). Commercial snapshot album holding 26 color drugstore print snapshots. An additional 12 color snapshots and 15 black and white 5" x 7" prints laid-in loose. All about near fine. An album and loose assortment of photographs documenting the opening of a JC Penney location in Reno, Nevada's Meadowood Mall in October, 1979 along with a grand re-opening following a remodel in August of 1986. The prints are undated, but I suspect the album mounted prints are from '86 while the loose photos are from 1979 given the identification of Nevada's First Lady Kathy List to the verso of one.

Various, including Phoenix, Arizona, [ca. 1951]. 54 black and white snapshot photographs. Loose. Typically about 5" x 3 1/2." [WITH] 45 original film negatives and a photographic booklet from a 1961 engineering symposium. An intriguing group of original photography documenting a Cadillac perforrmance test at the General Motors proving grounds facility in Phoenix, Arizona in the early 1950's (likely 1951 juding by one visible license plate). The images are captivating but the purpose of the test, which seems to have involved a 1915, 1935, and 1950(?) model Cadillac, is unclear. An later photographic booklet from an enginnering symposium in 1961, which was acquired by us from the same source is addressed to a Charles Scheffler, part of the engineering staff of the General Motors Technical Center in Warren Michigan, the likely photographer for the Cadillac views.

Some mild handling wear, most notably to the Polaroid. A few prints with ink notations to versos. Overall well preserved, group about very good. A small archive of color snapshot photography compiled by a woman known only to us as "Hollie" and documenting her time in Nashville and on the road as a back-up singer for the popular country music band Confederate Railroad, circa-1993. Views center on life on tour and on stage, several capture a scene in a Nashville Printer's Alley nightclub called Barbara's and feature excellent candid views of a pre-record deal Kenny Chesney, some show her at home with family, etc... An uncommon vernacular glimpse behind the scenes at early 1990's Nasvhille, through the eyes of a side performer, as the country music industry bommed in mainstream popularity. Brown vinyl over boards with "ALBUM" in stamped gilt to front. 10 adhesive card leaves in a plastic-comb binding holding 50 drugstore print color snapshot at rectos and versos. Prints firmly adhered to pages with plastic overlays intact. Previous owner's inscription to interior of front board reads: "THIS ALBUM IS DEDICATED TO / MIKE GRAHAM / FOR PINNING KENDO NAGASAKI / IN A NON TITLE MATCH & FOR / DEFEATING KENDO NAGASAKI IN / A KENDO STICK MATCH / #1." All about very good. An engaging album of original fan-captured snapshots, from the crowd and ringside, of mid-1980's Florida professional wrestling matches (at the Jacksonville Colisuem according to our source for this, the fan and original photographer). A substantial archive of vernacular photography intimately documenting flood and water control projects on levees and farmland in the immediate Illinois and Mississippi River watersheds in the early 20th Century, from mitigation of the devastating River floods of the 1920’s to the essential and enduring farm drainage work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Locations are plentifully identified in Central and Eastern Illinois spanning about 1917 into about 1939. Scattered ownership stamping to versos suggests these were compiled by an L.C. Craig, engineer with the state of Illinois division of waterways and later, Civilian Conservation Corps, as leader of its camp near Tuscola, Illinois during 1938-1939.… Read More
