Stewart, Tabori and Chang, New York, 1995; 235 x 235mm; pp 128; pictorial boards with the designs repeated on the dust wrappers; extremely good copy in first class condition. The book consists of over 125 striking photographs of specific sites identified by the original Americans of the northern part of the continent as holy sites or otherwise seen as capturing the earth's mystical essence there. The photographer, Courtney Milne, is a highly regarded landscape and natural features photographer closely associated with the environmental movement and the book has stunning examples of his work.

The Nichieisha, Tokyo, 1928; large 8vo, 150 x 225mm but also 135mm thick; half roan gilt, burgundy cloth sides, leather somewhat rubbed and worn but the binding itself mostly fairly firm and solid, allowing for the significant size of the book itself; however, the front hinge is weak, being externally cracked along its length and the front board now open to being moved a little side to side but firm on the inside hinge; end papers somewhat browned and with small tears and the edges of the volume dusty but internally clean although the first three dictionary pages have some careful red crayon underlinings of words; pp 6, [2], 4640. The sample book consists of approximately 250pp of very high quality coloured reproductions of brand identity illustrations and other designs for clients including Coca-Cola, Nike, Patagonia, Hurley, Sonos, the V&A, and many others. Calendar for 1934 published by the German sports paper "Sankt Georg", Berlin; 165x245mm; colour printed cover of a young rider breasting a hill on an exuberantly charging horse apparently conveying his joy in riding in the new Germany of the time, duly reifying Hitler's words quoted on the opening page "Nur durch eigene Arbeit, eigenen Fleiss und eigene Beharrlichkeit können wir emporsteigen". Each page carries one or more black and white photographs generally including horses, sometimes racing, sometimes in triumphal procession, sometimes with young riders, sometimes featuring bucolic or romantically historic scenes, Nazi officers or eminent personages such as Mussolini, Göring or the like and frequently with some supposedly uplifting saying or quotation. Ltd., [Tokyo], nd or, at least, none that I can determine, but possibly 1930s; 8vo, 150 x 200mm and also about 85mm thick; pp [vi], iv, v, [vi], 2680, [ii]; red cloth gilt, dustwrapper frayed and torn and with the two flaps loose but present; some occasional foxing but overall in good, firm, clean condition, albeit with the book's edges somewhat dusty or so marked. As the title indicates the work is a dictionary of English words translated into Japanese, here shown primarily in kanji but also with some kana; there are also numerous vignette line illustrations of the relevant words or context shown throughout in the text. NOTE that as the book weighs close to 1,600g carriage outside the UK will require a premium, the exact amount dependent on location and form.

The truck system, one of paying wages in kind rather than with money, was a national rather than a purely local approach and had been addressed by the Truck Act of 1831 which basically prohibited the payment of wages in kind.
