Description:
London: B. Law, J. Johnson, et al..., 1797. The Works of Tobias Smollett, with Memoirs of His Life. To which is prefixed a view of the commencement and progress of romance, by John Moore. Complete in 8-volumes. Printed in 1797. Bound in calf leather, gilded spines with raised hubs. Leather label, marbled end papers, rag paper, engraved frontisplate. 8.5 inches tall. In VERY GOOD condition, the leather is supple and fresh. The hinges are all attached, some light general rubs/wear, one of the leather labels is lacking. Printed on high quality rag paper that is very fresh bright and clean, appaears free of foxing, no writing. This is an exceptionally early set of Smollett's Works from the 18th century, in beautiful leather bindings.

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873. First American Edition, First Printing. First American Edition, and First Edition in English. First printing with no mention of the translator, George M. Towle, on the title-page. 291 pages plus endpapers and title page. Dark blue endpapers. Frontis illustration by Jules Verne of Le Saint Michel, his yacht. Title page in red and black ink. Roughly 4.5 by 6 inches. Bound in the publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and illustration (same as frontis). Some ornamentation in blind. Page edges dyed red. One of the classics in the genre of children's, travel, as well as science fiction. This edition preceded the English edition. In good condition. Complete and intact, but with a lot of generalized wear. There is a tiny edge stain at top corner of a few pages. The fragile tissue paper is present.
