London: Printed for John Nourse and Paul Vaillant, 1772 / 1771. ________ 8vo (about 8 1/8" x 5 1/4"); contemporaneous full calf, rebacked with original spines and red labels skillfully placed on top of rebacking. ________ Pagination: frontispiece, (iv), 377, (19) pp. with one plate; frontispiece, (xx), 442, (28), (1) pp. ________ This influential book (Three Treatises) was the first by James Harris who was a member of the London Art Society and a friend of Joshua Reynolds. The second title, Hermes, is among the most important and distinctive influences on the philosophy of language and the development of a universal grammar in the Enlightenment which Harris defines as: "that grammar which without regarding the several idioms of particular languages only respects those principles that are essential to them all" (Hermes, Bk I, Ch. 2).
