Vandergrift was born in Pittsburgh in 1846 and early in life embarked upon a career in the oil industry. He was broadly regarded as an authority on the production of oli and natural gas in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. He devoted much time to the study of geology and topography, particularly of Allegheny County. .

White (1853- ) was born in McKeesport, PA and was a successful physician in that town for many years. Dr. White was President of the McKeesport Light Company and of the Black Oil Company, and owner of the White's Opera House. White was also the vice-president of the Bank of McKeesport which began business in 1887 under a charter originally granted to the Shoe and Leather Bank of Pittsburgh. .

Two 19th century armorial bookplates of former owners, representing two generations of the Mason family - Sidney Mason (1799-1871) and Theodorus Bailey Myers Mason (1848-1899). The bookplates have in common a figure of a mermaid holding a mirror, which is the central representation in the earlier plate, and which is a smaller figure resting atop a lion in the later plate and the motto "Listo". OCLC 78239703 Exploding onto the New York art scene in the early 1960s, Tadasuke Kuwayama, known as Tadasky, was selling his Op art paintings to the Museum of Modern Art and architect Philip Johnson shortly after moving from Japan. Master of the circle, Tadasky worked almost exclusively in concentric rings on square canvases, producing seemingly infinite variations. By tweaking colors and widths, Tadasky caused color to appear to fluctuate, his circles to pop off of the canvas and into the viewer’s space. .

The top image is the bannerhead of the publication which depicts Boston (City on the Hill) and Boston Harbor with two steam paddleboats and several sailing boats and ships. The central text serves as explication of the lower image which depicts DECEMBER - a farmer on horseback converses with the miller as another man hauls grain into the Mill. Two extra mill stones rest against the building as water flows through the race.
