Description:
1936. Modern binding for a collection of 234 photographs documenting North American Textile Winding Machines 1921-1936. Binder with blue boards, cloth spine with gilt title on leather laid down, measures 8.75 x 12 x 3 inches. Photos measuring 8 x 10 inches are mounted on recto and verso of each leaf. Black and white photos with labels in very good condition exhibiting light soiling and edge wear. This curious collection compiles a large variety of Textile Winding Machines used in North American Mills from 1921-1936. Most photos are numbered in the negative which corresponds to the accompanying label text giving technical information on each machine. There are many different mills and several different makes and models represented which begs the question as to why this set was compiled. Usually, these industrial photo books document singular companies or manufacturers. Nonetheless, someone spent many years compiling this archive going so far as to 'stage' each photo with a folding white backdrop… Read More

This is Grundy County" Manuscript, circa 1968 File comprising typed and handwritten manuscripts, notes and research material Very Good condition overall, with a bit of light toning, creasing and edge wear. On offer here, the original manuscript for a history of Grundy County, Illinois, "This is Grundy County" by Helen Ullrich. The book was published in 1968. It is unclear whether the manuscript is complete; there are about 23 pages of handwritten manuscript, plus a few typed sections. Ullrich's handwriting is clear, and the manuscript shows her many notes and additions. It covers the region's history, topography and agriculture, and includes poetic language about her chosen subject: "Through Grundy flows the 'Illinois' / And, like God's Valley of the Nile / Grundy is an Eden Garden / On this County, God did smile." Grundy County was established in February, 1841. It was well known for its coal mines and attracted miners from Pennsylvania and other regions to work its deposits. The 1883… Read More

The Amphictyon Society was one of the earliest literary societies at Hillsdale College, which were formed by students to discuss, perform, and produce literature. The first literary society at the college, the Eunomian Society, was formed in the 1850s and was unique in admitting both men and women; however, after just a few years, the college's administration ruled against admitting men and women into the same societies, so a proliferation of gendered societies sprang up instead. The Amphictyon Society was one of these, exclusively for men, though by 1890, women may have been allowed at least as guests again - some of the names on these ticket… Read More
