Van Diemen's Land was the original name used by most Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia. The name was changed from Van Diemen's Land to Tasmania in 1856. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to land on the shores of Tasmania in 1642. Landing at Blackman's Bay and later having the Dutch flag flown at North Bay, Tasman named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, in honour of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, who had sent Tasman on his voyage of discovery. Between 1772 and 1798, only the southeastern portion of the island was visited. Tasmania was not known to be an island until Matthew…

The story Vanity Fair is framed as a puppet play, and the narrator, despite being an authorial voice, is somewhat unreliable. The serial was a popular and critical success; the novel is now considered a classic and has inspired several audio, film, and television adaptations. It also inspired the title of the British lifestyle magazine first published in 1868, which became known for its caricatures of famous people of Victorian and Edwardian society. In 2003, Vanity Fair was listed at No. 122 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's best-loved books.

The Met's blurb notes: "In 1865 Édouard Manet first saw the great collection of paintings by Velázquez in Madrid's Museo del Prado. Enraptured, he wrote to a friend, "He is the painter of painters ... He has astonished me, he has ravished me." Velázquez, the preeminent Spanish artist of the seventeenth century, continues to enthrall viewers. His sublime works express the very essence of the painter's art—they join an immense intelligence and extraordinary psychological acuity to a matchless technical facility. His images are deeply rooted in the physical world, yet their complex stillness transcends time, pointing toward a truth that exists beyond the ephemeral. Velázquez's intense concern with…

In an interview with The Guardian, Morris quipped: "Can you remember your first sight of Venice? No, I really canÂ’t remember it, but IÂ’ve since introduced innumerable people to their first sights of the city, and have greatly enjoyed their almost invariable ecstasies! How did you come to write Venice? The British Army took me to Venice at the end of the second world war, and for two months I had the duty of helping to run all the requisitioned motorboats of the city, before I went on with my regiment to Egypt and Palestine. It was the best present I ever had, a marvellous introduction to the city, and I have been attached to Venice ever since, writing four books about it plus a couple of million articles. Where…

Publisher's Weekly noted: "A gambado is a scam on a magnificent scale, and as such is irresistible to the devious, delightful Lovejoy, Gash's lover/dealer/forger of antiques, whose previous misadventures, criminal and amorous, have been chronicled in Jade Woman , Pearlhanger et al. Hollywood comes to East Anglia as Lovejoy is drawn into a high-paying consulting project for a movie spectacular about a theft from the British Museum. Complications are introduced by an aged Russian countess whose collection of family heirlooms sets Lovejoy's divvying heart a-pounding; by a local heavy reportedly sending containers loaded with antiques to America; by the death of an eminent neighborhood forger; and by the…

They were specifically designed for the rapid laying of minefields in enemy waters, close to harbours or sea lanes. As such they were required to be very fast and to possess sufficient anti-aircraft weaponry to defend themselves if discovered by enemy aircraft. A large load of up to 150 mines was required to be carried under cover, therefore a long, flushdecked hull with high freeboard was required. The mines were laid through doors in the sterns; the ships carried their own cranes for loading.

Google Books notes: "English landscape watercolor painting, a perfect marriage of genre and medium, entered a lively period of experimentation in style and content during the second half of the nineteenth century, with rich and diverse results. Through all the changes of style and technique and all the debates over the appropriate use of the medium, it was watercolor's ability to convey the timeless truth and reality of the natural world that mattered to artists, critics, and audiences. British watercolors of the Victorian period continued to observe an essential humility before nature; they remain fresh and compellingly immediate because they derived in the first place from the artists' heartfelt…

Pro-Quest notes: "Like any art catalogue, this volume, which accompanied The Victorians exhibition last year at the National Gallery of Art, performs the essential chore of informing museum visitors about which artists painted which pictures, the technique and process of their painting, the style and manner of execution. There is also a commendable logocentric interest in the texts and references upon which Victorian artists often depended for inspiration. It is well-assembled material, all in the comfortable Panofsky paradigm of the 101 survey. But in the last two decades especially, art history has become a series of questions rather than a collection of answers.…

Goodreads opined: "The nineteenth century was a time of unprecedented change, and nowhere was this more apparent than London. In only a few decades, the capital grew from a compact Regency town into a sprawling metropolis of 6.5 million inhabitants, the largest city the world had ever seen. Technology--railways, street-lighting, and sewers--transformed both the city and the experience of city-living, as London expanded in every direction. Now Judith Flanders, one of Britain's foremost social historians, explores the world portrayed so vividly in Dickens' novels, showing life on the streets of London in colorful, fascinating detail. From the…
