Description:
Hard Cover. Good. An apparently unpublished xerox index for this monumental work (at least under this title). Cloth spine over paper boards. 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Contains the title page, 3 blank pages, followed by 7 xerox pages, each apparently an index with 3 unlabeled columns per page. First column is probably the place (Antwerpen, Augsburg, Basel, Berlin, Blaubeuren, Breslau, etc). Second is the artist/designer/compiler (a guess on our part, not labeled) - M. van der Goes, Johan Bamler, Peter Berger, Johann Blaubirer, B. Richel etc etc. Third column notes Taf (Plate) and either a single plate or plate range. So one entry is: "Burgos, Fr. Biel, Taf. 53-56" and another "Coln Joh. de Bel, Taf. 59". We find no listing for this item in OCLC/Worldcat. Whether a unique item or not is difficult to say. Images available on request. Hard Cover.

New York, NY: Haskell House Publishers Ltd, 1977. Later printing. Cloth. Fine. Later printing. [2], 73 pages. 4vo. Publisher's blue cloth with white spine titles. A new copy. Cloth. A reprint of the 1929 edition. While the title page just notes Canada, the running titles internally as well as the spine labeling add "and Japan" which clearly reflects the content. Continuously paginated, but with several additional sections: "Rabindranath Tagore's Visit to Canada and Japan" (pp 1-51), "The Philosophy of Leisure" (pp53-60), "India and Europe" (pp. 61-64), "Message of Farewell to Canada" (pp 65-68), and "Ideals of Education" (pp. 69-73). The first and longest article by Mahalanobis reports in some depth on Tagore's visit to Canada and Japan with many reports from period news articles. The later articles are by Tagore himself. "Rabindranath Tagore FRAS; born Robindronath Thakur, 7 May 1861 - 7 August 1941), also known by his pen name Bhanu Singha Thakur (Bhonita), and also known by his sobriquets…

Cleveland, Ohio: The Cleveland Printing & Publishing Co / The Imperial Press, 1902. Cloth. Good. 251, [11-ads] pages. 8vo (6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches). Tan cloth printed in black. Apparently inscribed by author and daguerreian James F. Ryder on the front flyleaf: "Percival Calverts(?) I am Very Truly Yours" in dark ink. There are some discrepancies between this signature and the one underneath the frontis (a printed signature) but given that Ryder would have been 76 years old by this point and working with chemicals much of his life in photography it could very well be "right". We've priced it however as an unsigned copy as this is certainly conjecture on our part. A well thumbed and read copy. Cloth. "RYDER, JAMES F. (7 Apr. 1826-2 June 1904), photographer locally best known for encouraging ARCHIBALD WILLARD to paint The SPIRIT OF '76 and popularizing it through chromolithography, was born in Ithaca, N.Y. Inspired by the local daguerreotypist to purchase a camera, Ryder joined his establishment in 1847.…

Description:
Camden, NJ: Henry Whitall, 1871. sixth edition. Good. sixth edition. 15 1/4 inches in diameter. Constructed of a circular cardboard base with black and white printed instructions ("Directory of the Starry Heavens") affixed to the verso, and colored illustrations of the constellations affixed to the recto. Attached to the base is a revolving die-cut frame with instructions affixed with a metal rivet. The upper die cut has been damaged and repaired in several places, preserving most of the text and functionality albeit in a utilitarian manner. There is also some black material that is stuck to portions of the upper die cut. The colored constellation base also has some significant soiling from this black material, including a few places where previous owners have attempted to remove the black material and torn some of the surface off. The colors overall are faded with the yellows and light pinks faded and stronger in some places than others. Some locations have inked-over portions with the intent of…

Description:
Troy, N.Y.: W. & L. E. Gurley, 1899. Very Good. Roughly 5 7/8 inches square. Cellulite volvelle with brass grommet. Surface scuffing from use. Front with volvelle, rear with great illustration of surveying instrument and table below. A nice advertising piece for surveying instrument manufacturer Gurley, and useful besides. Inside ring is labeled Difference of Elevation. We have also seen this device offered as part of a pamphlet in a paper format. This format is far more useful for the surveyor's bag and no doubt was a response to customers interested in its use. A wonderfully graphic example of a working surveyor's tool. Includes directions for use. While at first glance 1899 might seem early for the use of the term "computer" applied to an object instead of a person, the term was first used on a volvelle by Aaron Palmer in 1843. Gurley is recognized as one of the most successful surveying instrument makers in the United States. Their instruments and related material are avidly collected by those…
