Washington: The National War Garden Commission, 1918. Octavo-sized booklet, stapled in wrappers (23 x 15 cm.), 32 pages. Illustrated throughout with comics. FIRST EDITION. A work promoting domestic war gardens in the U.S. during World War I, using comics and humor to look at the lighter side of food shortages and gardening. Most of the work reprinted from other newspapers and magazines. The pamphlet was published by the National War Garden Commission, established by Charles Lathrop Pack prior to the US entrance into World War I. The commission hoped that the war garden would counter the negative effects of a large crop failure in 1916, as well as interruptions in shipping due to submarine warfare, and the loss of farm workers due to enlistment. Some light creasing, otherwise near fine.

Salt Lake City, Utah: Printed at Geo. Q. Cannon & Sons Co, 1895. Octavo (20 x 14 cm.), 116 pages. Second Edition. "The first edition of this little work having been received with favor, I now venture to offer my friends and the general public, a new, revised, and enlarged edition." (from the preface); no copies of a first edition have been located. An early household manual published in Salt Lake City, with a combination of household, culinary and medical recipes. Margaret Cook records an 1886 publication by the Ladies of St Mark's Guild, SLC, as the earliest known Utah community cookbook, but notes that no copies are recorded and the book is only known through a statement on a 1909 revised edition. Early owner's name, "Sarah A. Evans" neé Brackham of Bringham Canyon, Utah, inscribed to front and rear endpapers. Hinges starting a bit, otherwise very good, in original, publisher's green cloth, with Gilt titling to front board. Overall very good. [OCLC locates twelve copies of this second edition,…

Washington, DC: Judd & Detweiler, Printer, 1890. Octavo (19.5 x 13.5 cm.), 110 pages. Subtitle on cover and flyleaf: A Cook Book. "Index" (page 17) is actually a table of contents. Advertisements on pages 1-14 and 95-110. FIRST EDITION. Two hundred twenty ascribed recipes gathered in support of a beloved urban space where "The seats in the church are free at every service". The dishes bear echoes of a British and conservative culinary orientation: Clam Chowder, English Rice Pudding, Farcied (i.e., stuffed) Tomatoes, Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, Apple Roly-Poly, Pickled Lemons, Shrewsbury Cakes, Soft Gingerbread, Fig Pudding. Included is a Plum Pudding that made the rounds in post-Civil War cookbooks, attributed to Mrs. General Sherman. Seldom is the immediate fund-raising goal of a church cookbook forthrightly stated, but Mrs. Valk and Miss Newton left no doubt: "The ladies who have compiled this little volume hope that it may accomplish the double mission of helping to conserve domestic serenity and of…

Potsdam: Muller & Kiephenhauer Verlag, 1928. Quarto, 74 pages. Photographically illustrated. FIRST EDITION. The first book by architect Rudolf Schwarz. Schwarz worked in the periphery of the Bauhaus and was a significant figure in the field in the twenties and early thirties. He had a great influence on his friend Mies Van der Rohe. The photographic illustrations are by Renger-Patzsch, and this remains the most elusive of the photographer's books. One plate shows some adhesion mark, but far from the image; otherwise internally fine. In striking, photographically illustrated, paper-covered boards, over black cloth spine. Some rubbing and light wear to boards, still very good. Very scarce. [OCLC locates twelve copies worldwide, with only two in the US, at MOMA and the National Gallery)].

Hartford, Conn: The Burr Index Co., Printers, 1914. Octavo (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), [xiv], 80, [xxii] pages. Advertisements (some illustrated). Index is actually a table of contents. Evident Third Edition; first appearance under this title. An enlarged revision of two earlier editions, of 1890 and 1895, both titled Bazaar Cook Book. Three hundred attributed recipes, gathered (one surmises) on the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of the congregation's recognition as a parish of the "West Division" of Hartford. Among items of interest: Turbot á la créme (baked in layers), Beauregard Eggs (visiting from points south?), Dolly Varden Cake (a still-circulating tribute to a character from Dickens), Ripe Currant Pie Hickory Nut Macaroons, and Crab Apple Ginger. ~ At the turn of the eighteenth century, the townspeople of Hartford supported three Congregationalist churches: First Church, Second Church (now South Church), and Third Church (today known as First Church of East Hartford).
