All edges gilt. 22 × 14cm, 258pp. This is Scottish novelist Leitch Ritchie's wanderings along the Seine from the Valley of Andeli and Chateau Gaillard, through Saint Germain and Paris, to Fountainebleau, Champagne and Troyes. The book is illustrated with twenty engravings by J M W Turner (vignette to engraved title and 19 plates). All plates are present as per the plate index, but with some small differences in pagination. Condition: Poor. The binding is rubbed to the spine ends, and the binding is split open at the engraved title page (the rear hinge is secure). The text is readable but the plates all suffer from foxing, but that's not to say they don't have considerable charm.

The book is in three sections: the past, the present, and the future and covers such ideas as German philosophy and characteristics, savagery, pacifism, the outcome, the future of Europe. The preface is dated May 1915, his son Raymond was killed in September 1915 in Flanders, and Oliver was to write of his attempts to communicate with his spirit. Condition: A rare first printing but in worn condition. The boards are rubbed with wear to the joints, and the pages tanned, However, the book remains in good readable condition.

While it expresses Tolstoy's view that history is an inexorable process which man cannot influence, he peoples his great novel with a cast of over five hundred characters. Condition: The books are in strong readable condition. There is some tanning and light foxing to the page edges but the main body of text is clean and the bindings are secure. The dustwrappers are good. There is fading to the spines and wear to the spine ends with slight loss. All three wrappers are now within protective sleeves.
