Description:
London: Evans Brothers, 1961. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14.5cm, 464pp. "Four hundred years ago the various medieval mystery plays - the great classic dramas of their day - were ousted from their prideful lace in the social and religious life of the time by over-zealous guardians of the Protestant faith. Since then, interest in them has necessarily been confined to those students and scholars equipped to conduct their researches in Middle English. Of the great cycles, York, Lincoln, Wakefield, and Chester, there is little doubt that Wakefield presents the most balanced and dramatic collection. Now, for the first time, it is available to all - to read, to take part in, to enjoy: a complete version of the original text, made intelligible to the modern audience and reader." The cycle is notable for the "The Second Shepherd's Play," one of the great treasures of medieval literature. Condition: The… Read More

Description:
London: Verso, 1984. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good Plus/Very Good. First UK edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 14cm, 365pp. During the phony war that preceded the invasion of France, between late 1939 and the summer of 1940, the young Jean-Paul Sartre was stationed in his native Alsace as part of a meteorological unit. He used his considerable periods of spare time, between mundane duties like watching weather balloons, to make a series of notes on philosophy, literature, politics, history and autobiography that anticipate the themes of his later masterpieces, and often surpass them in literary verve and directness. These War Diaries form a portrait of Sartre in his most intense and brilliant phase. With them the twentieth century's most remarkable and public philosopher has provided us with a fitting posthumous monument to his honest and creativity. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition, but with some foxing to the pages' top edge and a few specks… Read More

Hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 14cm, 255pp. This copy has been signed to the title page by both David Howarth and Jan Baalsrud. The author, David Howarth, served in the Royal Navy and SOE in the Second World War, setting up the Shetland Bus operation which was a clandestine route between Shetland and Norway. We Die Alone recounts one of the most exciting escape stories to emerge from the challenges and miseries of World War II. In March 1943, a team of expatriate Norwegian commandos sailed from northern England for Nazi-occupied arctic Norway to organize and supply the Norwegian resistance. But they were betrayed and the Nazis ambushed them. Only one man survived - Jan Baalsrud. This is the incredible and gripping story of his escape. Frostbitten and snowblind, pursued by the Nazis, he dragged himself on until he reached a small arctic village. He was near death, delirious, and… Read More

London: Sidgwick and Jackson, 2000. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 15.5cm, 331pp. Signed and dedicated by Guy Patton to the ffep. A book in the tradition of 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail' that links the Roman sack of Jerusalem in AD70, the sudden wealth of a priest in Rennes le Chateau in the 1800s, Hitler's SS, and the body of an Italian banker found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in the 1980s. Legend has long suggested that the treasure of the Jews was, following the Visigoth sack of Rome, brought to France. The Middle Ages' and Renaissance profusion of 'secret societies' - ranging from the crusading Knights Templar to the forerunners of today's freemasons - may have been established to protect this hidden wealth. It has remained a magnet for power seekers throughout history and seems to be the key to many mysteries: Rennes le Chateau, the origins of Nazi gold, the Vatican bank… Read More

Newcastle: Bloodaxe Books, 1994. First Edition. . Paperback. Very Good. First edition, paperback. 21.5 × 14cm, 112pp. Signed directly to the title page by Andrew Greig. An adventurous long poem conjured around a displaced Scotland. Driven by rare energy, dark humour and glee, as well as a wonderful sense of what is strange and what is possible, Western Swing is an exploration of desire, loss and renewal in our lives. Combining quest narrative, shaggy-dog story, lyricism, meditations and eclectic "sampling", the poem propels us from Glencoe to Katmandu, by flying carpet to Cambridge, into the High Atlas Mountains, on to Marrakech, returning to the Celtic kingdom of Dalriada for a show-down on a pier in East Fife. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22.5 × 14cm, 217pp. Signed directly to the title page by A L Kennedy. A.L. Kennedy's fifth collection of short stories show us exactly what becomes of the broken-hearted. Her characters are perfectly ordinary people - whose marriages founder; who sit on their own in a cinema watching a film with no soundtrack; who risk sex in a hotel with an anonymous stranger or who order a luxurious meal as their lives fall apart - but the stories she weaves around them are truly remarkable. She reveals the sadness, violence, hurt and terror, but also the redemption and the love - and she does so with enormous human compassion and leaps of black humour. Sheffield: Tomahawk Press, 2010. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 25 × 17.5cm, 296pp. An extensively researched and compelling biography of Carry On stalwart Charles Hawtrey, almost fifteen years in the making, featuring scores of exclusive interviews, including Hawtrey's inner circle and surviving descendents, never-before-seen photographs, and private documents and correspondence. The result is the first definitive account of a life Hawtrey himself was keen to see evaporate into the mist of history. Years before, Hawtrey started out as a child actor in silent films, he was England's leading boy soprano and worked alongside a positive who's who of the thirties and forties. He had directed films and produced West End shows, starred in three hit TV series and was a prolific radio actor for the BBC. Yet he was never content and spent his life desperately searching for stardom and success, which, in his… Read More

Description:
London: Richard Cohen Books / Metro, 1999. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good. Uncorrected Proof. Paperback. 20.5 × 14.5cm, 338pp. Al Alvarez, poet, critic, novelist, sportsman, and poker player, has for seventy years been hard to categorize. He is the author of the best-selling study of suicide, "The Savage God", and as poetry editor of the "Observer", he has known most of the leading poets of the second half of last century. For a time he was an influential critic and his anthology "The New Poetry" scandalised the literary community. Much of the liveliness of Alvarez's story is inspired by the ambiguous fate of being an English Jew. Although his family had been settled in London for more than two centuries, being Jewish always made them feel like outsiders. He went from Oundle, an English public school, to Oxford, where an academic career beckoned; instead he embarked on life as a freelance writer. Meanwhile he climbed mountains, played poker and wrote books… Read More

Description:
London : Newman Communications, 1980. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/Good. First edition. Paperback in wrapper. 24.5 × 18cm, 206pp. "Why is British architecture so lousy?" is a fictional quotation, but the charge it makes is certainly real. In a country whose architectural heritage is as great as anywhere in the world, typical public relations to Britain's contemporary architecture dwell on its mediocrity, insensitivity, cost and sameness. Clearly Britain has an architecture where self-congratulation is normal among the makers, but discontent widespread among the ungrateful users. To face the uncomfortable implications of this book's title, some of those centrally concerned with architecture express themselves - often, but not always, in agreement. An introduction by architecture school head Nathan Silver poses the question and suggests places to look for answers. In four sections (because of the architects / because of the planners / because of the press / because of… Read More
