Windsor: W.F. Taylor, Library, 1880. 12mo, pp. 33, [1] + 1 frontispiece and 7 plates. Original pale blue paper wrappers printed in black. Somewhat foxed and toned, some offsetting from plates, small dampmark to upper margin. Spine somewhat nibbled. Pencil gravestone transcriptions to inside wrappers. A scarce, undated printing of a guide to Windsor Castle. L.V. Harcourt’s ‘An Eton Bibliography’ dates an example of this title (with different pagination) to 1875, but it seems likely that copies were produced with slight variations throughout the second half of the nineteenth century.

Glasgow: Published by Lumsden & Son, 1815. 24mo, pp. 47, [1]. 8 leaves of plates printed in sanguine included within pagination. Original drab paper wrappers pasted to first and last leaves as issued, front wrapper lettered in ink. Wrappers rubbed to one corner and a little creased. A scarce chapbook abridgement of this popular devotional work, one of several printed by Glasgow publisher James Lumsden, with 14 striking woodcuts printed in red. The whiff of a Bewick attribution hangs about it, probably spuriously, although Tattersfield does record contemporary Lumsden chapbooks as using blocks from Bewick’s workshops, and Hugo attributes to Bewick the woodcuts in a different Lumsden Divine Songs from the same period. Uvin and Pafford between them suggest a genealogy for the plates that may go back to a Newcastle printing, possibly by Bewick or his workshop, though Tattersfield does not record Pafford’s suggested original source among several known Bewick Divine Songs.… Read More

London: Published for Charles Heath, 1840. 8vo, pp. [ii], ii, iii, [i], ff. 50 + frontispiece and 50 plates. Later half calf, green cloth boards, spine divided by raised bands gilt, green morocco label, other compartments tooled in gilt. A little spotting, some tissue-guards lost. A little rubbed, some wear to spine-ends. Inscription to flyleaf: ‘to Anne Juliana Storey from her sincere friend J.W., January 2nd 1843’. The 50 illustrations cover the Waverley novels up to and including 1823’s ‘Quentin Durward’; the frontispiece is the engraved title-page from a similar publication, ‘The Waverley Keepsake’, complete with that title retained.

Waltham Saint Lawrence: Golden Cockerel Press, 1923. NO. 99 OF 320 COPIES, 8vo, pp. 46, [4]. Colour woodcut frontispiece and 2 colour woodcut plates included in pagination. Original pale blue boards backed in ecru cloth, paper label to spine. Binding a little soiled and toned. Bookplate of Francis E. Bliss to pastedown. An early work from the Golden Cockerel Press, with attractive woodcuts by Ethelbert White which were nevertheless unpopular with press proprietors Hal and Gay Taylor, and were ‘universally condemned’ (Cave and Manson, History of The GCP, p. XXX). This led directly to White’s replacement by Robert Gibbings in the Taylors’ next project and Gibbings’ subsequent acquisition and stewardship of the press over the next decade. A little bumped, board edges lightly marked, tiny mark to dustjacket front panel. Ishiguro’s fifth novel, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in its year of publication.

St Andrews: Entropie Books, 2015. ONE OF 24 COPIES, 220 x 300mm, ff. 26 (including two title-pages). Screen-printed by hand in white on various coloured backgrounds, signed and dated by the author on an endpaper. Loosely wrapped in shoji paper, and housed, Japanese-style, in a binding of maroon cloth with Fabriano Ingres grey endpapers, bone fastenings, and hand-printed shoji paper cover title, with a hand-printed place-marker loosely inserted. New. A limited screen-print edition of twenty-four pieces of poetic text. The texts are printed in white on richly coloured backgrounds and the loose sheets - 24 texts and two title-pages - are contained in a Japanese-style case binding also by the author/artist. Morton writes: ‘Each fascinating monochrome is emphasised by white, and white, in turn, in this book becomes interesting. Folded sheet containing 18-line manuscript poem loosely inserted. Kenneth White’s first book, published at the end of his doctorate study at the Sorbonne, which was later expanded and translated for the dual-language ‘En Toute Candeur’ the following year. This copy is one of the 400 unnumbered trade examples from a total print run of 650 copies.

Both pamphlets a little creased and soiled, staples rusted. Two pamphlets by poet, classicist and, between 1942 and 1945, leader of the SNP, Douglas Young (1913-1973). In 1943 Young was between prison terms for ‘his refusal of both military and industrial wartime conscription for the purposes of raising the topic of Scottish independence in courtroom tribunals’ (McCaffrey, ‘The Adjacent Kingdom of England’, Études écossaises 17, p. 88) - he argued unsuccessfully that Scots could not be conscripted to fight abroad under the 1707 Act of Union. First editions of the initial three volumes of The Domesday Books, a series of books set in Elizabethan England penned by Keith Miles (b. 1940) under the pseudonym Edward Marston, a name taken from Elizabethan playwright John Marston (1576-1634). The postcards from the author in the first and third books present the copies to a previous owner.

First and third works toned. Paper lifting from boards at edge of leather. An early paperback issue of a 1902 adventure novel by prolific author Fergus Hume (1859-1932), who produced over a hundred books but is best-remembered for his first, ‘The Mystery of a Hansom Cab’, from 1886. It is bound with two other early paperback issues of late Victorian novels.

Dustjacket price-clipped, a few marks to rear panel, spine panel slightly browned and a touch rubbed, short split at head of front joint fold. Inscribed on the flyleaf by one of the authors: ‘Rab, Love from Robert’. Higginson & Williams B30.

Later black boards, printed paper labels to spines. Labels toned, one label chipped, just a touch of wear to extremities. A tidy set of the second edition of the first collected works of Burns, following the 1800 Liverpool edition. The textual changes between the editions were minor, and the frontispiece is in fact the same plate (with its own imprint dated 1800) reused across the three. ‘The content is in the same order, but the differences reflect this new edition, most notably in the new advertisement, the lack of a list of subscribers, and the added appendix’ (Lamont). Contemporary marbled calf, spines divided by triple gilt rules, red morocco labels, 4th compartments numbered direct in gilt. 2 leaves in vol. 4 torn horizontally halfway through without loss, some spotting and soiling. Spines a little crackled and rubbed, a little wear to spine ends. Gift inscription to Kenneth Moody-Stuart to pastedown of vol. 1 dated July 1880. The first collected edition of Burns’ work, which was reprinted in London the following year. As well as his poetry the volumes contain many of his letters and biographical and critical notes. This copy belonged to Dumfriesshire minister and author Kenneth Moody-Stuart (1842-1904). ESTC T91494; Lamont 53.

Armourial bookplate of Cranstoun of Corehouse to front pastedowns, ink ownership inscription of George Cranstoun to title-pages. This copy of Samuel Foote’s (1720-1777) collected dramatic works belonged to Scottish advocate George Cranstoun (1770-1850), a peer and friend of Walter Scott’s. ESTC N25901.
