About This Item

Tarzana, CA: Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Hardcover. b&w frontispiece. pp. 375.,8vo,,Bound in tan cloth with dark brown/red lettering.,Bottom corner of rear board bumped. Slight shelf wear & soiling. Binding tight. Free of previous owner's markings. Good plus to very good condition. Wants dust jacket. Remember: when price-checking this book, relatively inexpensive copies will be offered with the claim that the book is a first edition, and/or was published in 1922 when, in fact, this Burroughs, Inc., edition was actually published in 1948. (Hint: any edition published by Burroughs, Inc., in a tan/gray binding is a reprint). Without the help of a thorough Burroughs' bibliography, such as Heins or Zeuschner, it is unfortunately easy for an uninformed bookseller to incorrectly describe this book. If in doubt - ask the dealer which bibliography was used to identify the book as a first edition. Cheaper is not always better. First published in 1922, this is the 1948 reprint, with the J. Allen St. John frontispiece. Zeuschner 96.

Synopsis

The Chessmen of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the fifth of his famous Barsoom series. Burroughs began writing it in January, 1921, and the finished story was first published in Argosy All-Story Weekly as a six-part serial in the issues for February 18 and 25 and March 4, 11, 18 and 25, 1922. It was later published as a complete novel by A. C. McClurg in November, 1922.
