Queen Nefertiti, wife of Akhenaten, the monotheistic pharaoh, was the most influential woman in the Bronze Age, 14th Century B.C. She was celebrated throughout Egypt. She suddenly disappeared from the royal family, vanishing as if she had never been. No records survived her death, no monument, her body was never found. Her expulsion and death remain a mystery. The author poses some possible reasons for this. Her world-famous image--on the jacket--in the form of the painted bust discovered in 1912 and first exhibited in 1924, captures her beauty and she is now the most recognizable qyeen of ancient Egypt. Joyce Tyldsley uses a combination of archaeological, textual, and artistic evidence to provide a detailed discussion of the life and times of Nefertiti, set against the background of the heretical and ephemeral Amarna court, rulers in 14th Century B. C. Egypt. 232 pages with Notes, Further Reading Suggestions and Index. 6.25 x 9.25 inches. 1999, Viking/Penguin Books, New York

Synopsis

For over a decade, Nefertiti, wife of the heretic king Akhenaten, was the most influential woman in the Bronze Age world: a beautiful queen blessed by the sun god, adored by her family, and worshipped by her people. Her image and her name were celebrated throughout Egypt and her future seemed golden. Suddenly Nefertiti disappeared from the royal family, vanishing so completely that it was as if she had never been. No record survives to detail her death, no monument serves to mourn her passing, and to this day her end remains an enigma—her body has never been found. Fully revising her classic biography of Egypt’s sun queen, historian Joyce Tyldesley draws on a wealth of scholarly and archeological evidence to investigate the truth behind the life, times, and mysterious disappearance of the legendary Nefertiti.
