London: Collins,, 1955. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: " Elizabeth and Hacks from Peter, Christmas 1955". The author Bertha Gladys Stern (1890-1973) wrote under the name G. B. Stern. She was known as Gladys as a child, later substituted Bronwen for Bertha, and was called Peter by her friends (but Tynx by Rebecca West). Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt. Gift inscription in ink to front free endpaper. A very good copy, spine cocked, spine ends bumped; in the original dust jacket, a touch soiled, spine sunned, a few nicks and short closed tears, extremities a little rubbed, colours still very bright and dust jacket unclipped.
