About This Item

Derby: Breedon Books, 2001. VG/VG. First Edition, First Printing in d/w not price clipped. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR, SUE SMART. on title-page. Inscription reads, 'For ------/With all good wishes/Sue Smart'. Profusely illustrated with photographs. On Saturday, 18 July 1914, the cricket team of Gresham's School in rural Norfolk took to the field for the annual match against the Old Boys. Yet the scorecard from that day, still preserved in the Gresham's archives, would become one of the school's most powerful of the loss it was about to suffer. Two weeks later, the Great War erupted and, by its end in 1918, Gresham School, which has 229 boys on its rollat the outbreak, had lost 100 pupils and one master to that most awful of conflicts. Eleven of the 24 players on the scorecard were among them. Now Sue Smart, who teaches history at Gresham's, has written a powerful book about the lives of these schoolboys at war. With Index. No slipcase. Some light age tanning to edges of pages; some light bruising to top and lower corners of rear cover; d/w has two short edge tears (longest 11mm); d/w has light creasing to edges; else a very good copy, in a very good d/w, of a SCARCE first edition, first printing SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, SUE SMART. D/w now protected in a detachable, non-adhesive, sheaf. . Presentation Copy Inscribed And Signed. First Edition, First Printing. Hardback. Very Good/Very Good.
