NY: Whittlesey House/Mcgraw-Hill, (1947). First edition. . Blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered and designed in red and gilt. Ownership signature on inner front cover, a clean very good to fine copy in a slightly chipped and worn dust jacket with closed tears at folds and edges, and some loss at the top of the spine. This copy is of the first issue (see Hanrahan A1), with the original price of $3.50 on both front and rear jacket flaps, and the herringbone end papers. Maurice Sendak's first illustrated book, done when he was 18.
