New York: Whittlesey House/McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1947. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. First edition, second issue (with plain endpapers). Illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Introduction by Harold C. Urey. Tall octavo. xiv, 281pp. Blue cloth. Contemporary owner name and date on front fly and dedication page, boards lightly rubbed, moderate edgewear with a couple small tears on the foredge of rear board, very good in a price-clipped, fair dust jacket with loss, tape reinforcements and the upper flap separated. The first book to be illustrated by Sendak who was, at the time, one of Mr. Ruchlis's high school physics students. Urey, the author of the introduction, was an American chemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934. This book was an early attempt to explain nuclear energy and its awesome forces to the lay reader.
