About This Item

Melbourne, VIC, Australia: Melbourne University Press, 2000 Critical, but fair and detailed account of the life and times of Frank Hardy. From the cover notes: Frank Hardy's famous novel 'Power Without Glory" was printed and published secretly in Melbourne in 1950. Its appearance and the subsequent criminal libel case became perhaps Australia's greatest literary cause celebre. Armstrong's narrative shows the growing energy and excitement Hardy brought to the task of writing the manuscript. Frank Hardy died in 1994. A Communist propagandist, loud-mouthed larrikin and humorist, he wrote many plays, novels, short stories and newspaper articles, and actively championed the rights of Aboriginal people. The late B A Santamaria believed that "Power Without Glory" would become a "social document for history researchers". This remarkable account of its production should be considered an essential companion text. Contains about 36 black and white photos of individuals and locations, and some reproductions of cartoons. Bibliography and Index. 249 pages. Books listed here are not stored at the shop. Please contact us if you want to pick up a book from Newtown.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Size F: 9"-10" Tall (228-254mm).
