About This Item
Pennylvania University Press, 1992. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine in fine dust jacket. First printing. Hardcover. 245 pp. with index. Illustrations. Most people are familiar with the story of William Penn and the founding of Pennsylvania in the second half of the 17th century. But few may know of what became of the "proprietorship" in the years after his 1718 death. This work studies the story of two of the last members of the Penn family, Thomas and John, to figure signnificantly in Pennsylvania's affairs before the colonies declared independence in 1776. Thomas was William Penn's son and became chief proprietor and groomed his nephew to be governor of the colony by 1763. Traditional Penn family control was continually threatened by the legislature (and by Benjamin Franklin). Thomas died in 1775 and when the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, John knew that the end of Penn leadership was near; he was eventually forced into exile.
