About This Item

Montreal, QC: McGill - Queens University Press, 1999. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: 414. FIRST EDITION. An account of the history of Irish Catholics who settled in what was once, Protestant Toronto during the last part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th to about 1920. The author challenges the accepted belief that the Irish were repressed and offered limited opportunities. McGowan proposed that, in fact, they progressed nicely, and became, at the end of the First World War "...an integrated segment of English Canadian society..." (cover blurb). This is a very good copy, or a bit better, with light soiling and wear.
