About This Item

British Library, 1992 4to (27.5 cm), 64 pp. Laminated wrappers. "The Sforza Hours is one of the finest surviving Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, and has a fascinated history. Its lavish decorations were painted in two campaigns, the first around 1490 for Bona of Savoy, widow of Galeazso Sforza, Duke of Milan. Thirty years later, in 1517-20, Bona's heir Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands, commissioned 16 additional miniatures to complement Birago's. Mark Evans unravels the multifaceted history of the manuscript and, with the help of reproductions of 80 full-pages and details, demonstrates its unique place among the masterpieces of Renaissance art."
