Good in a Very Good jacket, unclipped ($20.00), lightly toned at the top edge, closed tear at the top of the front spine fold, small chip at the foot of the spine. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Square, bound with reading wear, a stain at the top edge. Pakenham's comprehensive history of the war based on "first-hand but largely unpublished sources.
Synopsis
The war declared by the Boers of South Africa on October 11, 1899, gave the British, as Kipling said, 'No end of a lesson.' The public expected it to be over by Christmas. It proved to be the longest, the costliest, the bloodiest and most humiliating war that Great Britain fought between 1815 and 1914.
