About This Item

Oxford University Press, London, 1976 reprint of 1971 second edition. Cloth, 8vo,. xix, 394 pp, 46 plates, 10 figs. From the blurb: "Dr. Plenderleith. previously Keeper of the Research Laboratory in the British Museum, wrote this book in response to requests from museums and private collectors at home and abroad. Based on upwards of forty years' practical experience in dealing with the wide variety of problems that arise in the conservation of museum objects of all kinds, it is the most comprehensive work of its kind in any language. Information is given on the nature of the materials found in museums, libraries, archives and picture galleries; the causes of their deterioration are discussed, and detailed instructions given on methods of preservation, and, where necessary, on repair and restoration. Its numerous illustrations of superb works of art which have been saved for posterity by treatment in the laboratory bear witness to the success of techniques which are based on a combination of scientific knowledge and a specialized form of craftsmanship. The book has been extensively revised for this second edition and includes many new techniques of conservation that have been developed since it was first published. Very Good in a price-clipped dustwrapper with a creased spine-panel.
