Spain and France made claims in the New World in the 16th century but failed to establish dominion over North America. Francis Parkman, author of "The Oregon Trail" and "The Conspiracy of Pontiac", tells why in this book. The first part deals with the attempts of the Spanish and French Huguenots to occupy Florida and the second part with the expeditions of Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain in Canada and Acadia. 473 pages indexed. 8 x 5.25 inches. 1996, Books/University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, Nebraska and London, England.
