About This Item
HarperCollins, 2009. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "For Mark Hatfield, the Senator I most admire! Douglas Brinkley, 4/3/10, Portland, Oregon." With Hatfield's embossed library stamp on the same page. Hatfield spent eight years as Oregon's governor and then 30 in the US Senate. His record on the environment was mixed, in that he facilitated the sale of a lot of timber and helped dam key rivers in Oregon. At the same time, Hatfield was indeed instrumental in preserving much of Oregon's current wilderness and wild and scenic rivers, as well as the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. A great association copy, inscribed to Hatfield the year before he died. A fine book in a fine jacket. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
