Part I of this HANDBOOK consists of 324 articles by various expert contributors. The essays are arranged into eight sections: 1) origin (Broadway, classical, film music, Harlem, etc.); 2) foreign influence (Africa, Canada, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Germany, etc.); 3) domestic influence (bebop, bluegrass, blues, country/western, folksong, Motown, ragtime, rockabilly, zydeco, etc.); 4) dissemination (Academy awards, ASCAP, Big Bands, cabaret, crossover, player piano, Top Forty, Your Hit Parade); 5) historical survey (depression years, gay nineties, golden age, roaring twenties, WWI, WWII, etc); 6) genre (bolero, boogie-woogie, bossa nova, calypso, doo-wop, funk, heavy metal, march, merengue, novelty song, protest song, Reggae, rock, samba, shoe tune, tango, etc), 7) song subject (age, beauty, humor, love, money, etc.), 8) style of music and lyrics (rhythm, harmony, improvisation, pickup, scat singing, slang, syncopation, vamp, waltz, etc). Bibliographies. Finally there is a comprehensive Index of performers, composers, lyricists, songs, and entries.
