About This Item
New York, NY, U.S.A.: N A L, 1997. First Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This unique book follows seven enthusiastic would-be moviemakers through three years of struggle, misadventure and triumph in the film business. All are talented, ambitious, and driven by the desire to direct movies. All have come to the ultimate dream factory, Hollywood, to realize their dreams. Exactly what happens to them and their illusions is told in their own excruciatingly honest words, making this a most intimate and revealing look inside the system of moviemaking. Added to these first-person narratives are original, insightful commentaries from notable Hollywood directors, writers, and agents like Robert Benton, Gillian Armstrong, Frank Darabont, and others who have succeeded in a realm where greed, double-dealing, bloodthirsty power politics, and maddening myopia all come with the territory. This fascinating book pulls no punches and sugarcoats no bitter truths--even as it captures the magic that makes otherwise sane people take crazy risks to be the ones to tell the cameras to roll. Replete with advice and object lessons, WHAT I REALLY WANT TO DO IS DIRECT is frank, funny, and thoroughly entertaining. Fine, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. N33
