About This Item

University of California Press, 1986. First edition. From Library Journal In 1982, the University of California, San Diego, hosted the International Stravinsky Symposium in celebration of the centenary of the composer's birth. The 21 papers presented there have been collected in this handsome volume and edited with care by Pasler, the symposium's director. The scope and quality of the material is impressive, though much of the subject matter will interest only serious scholars, particularly the knotty sections on theoretical perspectives and compositional practices. Unfortunately, one of the lighter and more inventive contributions, a droll essay by Roger Shattuck, inexplicably has been pared down. Still, the book will be an important resource for music students and should be acquired by libraries with substantial music holdings. Larry Lipkis, Music Dept., Moravian Coll., Bethlehem, Pa.
