About This Item
New York, New York, U.S.A.: Henry Holt & Co, 1997. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A re-imagining of the lives of two famed eighteenth-century British surveyors and their various entanglements. Stated first edition. First printing with correct full number line sequence. So, without removing the dust jacket, this book is near perfect condition. From the outside, and even flipping through the pages, it appears to have virtually no wear; the pages are crisp and clean with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. Spine is tight and crisp. Corners are square with no bumping, and the boards are flat and true. Dust jacket is not price-clipped ($27.50) and has only minor edge wear/scuffing. Now here is the bad news--there is a dark blue, 2" by 4" moisture stain on the upper left corner and along the spine of the INSIDE of the back cover of the dust jacket. This moisture damage is mirrored on the back board, which is slightly lightened in this area. The rear endpapers have a very small (1" by 1/2") blue stain in the gutter along the upper edge. Otherwise, the textblock is wholly unaffected. Unless the jacket is removed, one cannot tell there are any flaws with this book, so the good news is that the damage serves only to make it that much more affordable! This collectible, very good/very good, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!
Synopsis
Mason and Dixon by Thomas Pynchon is a sprawling, complex, and rather comic work: his Most Magickal reinvention of the 18th-century novel. This tale follows the lifelong partnership and adventures of the English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon (of Mason-Dixon Line fame) as they travel the world mapping and measuring through an uncharted pre-Revolutionary America of Native Americans, white settlers, taverns, and bawdy establishments of ill-repute.
