About This Item

Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1983. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. As new [removed from shrinkwrap for cataloguing]/as new. Susan P. Fillion (Jacket design). 2 volumes. Volume I, xliv, [2], 1-568, lxi, [10] pages and Volume II, viii, [2], 569-1362, xxv, [7] pages. Endpaper has units of measurement comparison. Illustrations. World Distribution of Mammals charts. Index. Foreword by E. Raymond Hall. Minor dings to back of Volume II DJ. From aardwolves and bandicoots to yapoks and zorillas, Ernest P. Walker's Mammals of the World is the most comprehensive-the preeminent-reference work on mammals. Most of the texts from previous editions has been revised. A new section on literature cites has been added to this edition. Approximately 350 illustrations are new to this edition. Ronald M. Nowak and John L. Paradiso were mammalogists with the Office of Endangered Species, Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Nowak served as editorial consultant for the National Geographic Society's Wild Mammals of North America. This is their eighth joint publication. In 1930, the great mammalogist Ernest P. Walker (1891-1969), who was then assistant director of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., set out to make a checklist of all the world's mammal species. Thirty-four years later, that simple catalog had grown into the huge first edition of Mammals of the World, a book dedicated to all mammals. Walker, upon discovering that there existed no single book containing descriptions of all the world's mammalian genera, set out to collection information from every possible source, searching tireless through thousands of books, articles, and correspondence with mammalogists the world over. His magnum opus reflected an unequaled store of knowledge about the world's living mammals.
