Paris: Goupil & Co.. AS NEW set. Bibliophilists ed. Limited to 250 copies, this #41.. 1883. 1st Am ed.. Hardcover. AS NEW set of 8 parts. ABPC records no sets, either parts or bound. RBH records a set in 4 vols in 1984. . First American edition. Set is 8 19"x13" portfolios, each with string tie closures. Continuous pagination to 384. These are all pristine, in & out. Covers are flawless. Internally ZERO aging, foxing, soiling, marginalia, etc. Parts are divided into two books, parts 1-4 being book 1, 5-8 being book 2. Part 1, with first 12 artists, has a full title page, tables of the artists with named illustrations and a preface. Part 5, for the last 12 artists, same format but no preface. Parts 2-4 & 6-8 all have half titles only. Each part a portfolio of silk covered stiff paper boards. All leaves of Imperial Japan paper. All gravures with tissue guards. Each part covers three artists, 24 in total. Artists are Louis Leloir, Detaille, Dore, Duez, Francais, Maurice Leloir, Le Blant, Worms, Lambert, Harpignes, de Beaumont, Rothschild, Heilbuth, Vibert, Lemaire, de Neuville, Lami, Jourdain, Baron, Isabey, Jacquet, Jacquemart, Delort and Tissot. 16 pages for each artist. Text pages with in text illustrations. At back of each part are 9 extra leaves of gravures, 3 for each artist, printed one side only. The blank versos of some of these extra leaves bear the stamp 'Geneva [NY] Historical Society'. NONE of these added 200+ leaves of gravures are captioned. About a quarter have no names in the plates (that I can see). Only five artists have identifiable names in the plate. These are Leloir & Detaille (the first two), Harpigne, de Newville and Isobey. .
